What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Chengdu Panda Base for its adorable pandas and well-maintained, spacious enclosures that mimic natural habitats. The opportunity to see famous pandas like Huahua is a major highlight. However, some note that pandas may be less active or visible outdoors during hot weather, and prices for souvenirs and food inside the park are higher than outside.
"Very very large park with multiple pandas residing here. The park is huge hence be prepared to walk. Not all pandas are viewable given the weather condition. Some will be indoors within air conditioned enclosures and not available for viewing during hot days. Managed to see 1 who was chilling in running water. There is also a red panda which is a smaller species.
Retails sales is brisks. We got some within the park and bought more outside at the stall. The latter price is a lot cheaper hence withstand the urge until you have exited the park."

"I visited the Chengdu Panda Base and it was absolutely wonderful! 🐼 The highlight of my trip was seeing Huahua, the star panda, happily munching on bamboo. 🌿 Such an unforgettable experience — the pandas are so adorable and well cared for. Highly recommend visiting if you’re in Chengdu!"

"This place is super impressive and super clean. Go on off season when it's not so crowded. Also know that during the summer it would be hot and the pandas will be in the indoor closures. I suggest going during the cooler season because you can see the pandas in the outdoor in the Villa areas of the park. Do know that the DD taxi drop off location is a little far from the entrance and about a 10-minute walk up a small hill. The bathroom by this location is extremely clean. That was. I was so pleasantly surprised. There's plenty of trash bins and you can get a really good sense that people really care about working there and taking care of the pandas. I highly recommend going here and making it the number one spot for your trip to tend to"

Understanding Panda Behavior
It's also important to remember that pandas are solitary animals outside of mating season. While the base houses many pandas, they are generally kept in separate enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitat. This setup allows them to have their own space and reduces stress. Patience is key when viewing; sometimes, you might need to wait a bit for a panda to move into a more visible position.
Key takeaway: Plan your visit around cooler times of day and seasons for the best chance to see active pandas. Be patient and enjoy observing their natural routines.
Navigating the Chengdu Panda Base
For those concerned about covering the large distances, consider renting an electric cart. These small vehicles can be rented on-site and offer a convenient way to traverse the park, especially if you have limited mobility or are traveling with young children. The taxi drop-off point, while convenient, is a short walk from the main entrance, which involves a slight incline. This is a minor point, but worth noting for those with mobility concerns.
Pro-tip: Utilize the park's map and consider an electric cart rental to maximize your experience and minimize fatigue.
Souvenirs and Shopping
Many travelers have discovered that stalls located just outside the main entrance sell similar panda merchandise at considerably lower prices. This price difference can be quite significant, making it a worthwhile strategy to wait until you've exited the park before making your souvenir purchases. This approach allows you to compare prices and get more for your money.
Smart shopper tip: Hold off on buying souvenirs until you've left the park to find better deals.
