What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Shaxi Ancient Town is praised for its charming, less commercialized atmosphere compared to larger ancient towns. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained traditional architecture, unique local boutiques, and the historical significance of the Tea Horse Road. While it can get crowded, visiting early or late offers a more serene experience.
"A small ancient town with similar vibes to Lijiang and Dali ancient town. This is much smaller than the other ancient towns and seems less commercialised. The shops seem to be individual boutiques that sells unique products. My group went in the late morning and it is not as crowded. By the time it’s noon, groups of tourist came and it starts to get busy. Worth a visit if you are nearby!"

"A rural village between Dali and Lijiang that has been turned into a tourist destination. The good: Exposing visitors especially foreigners to village setting in China. Earth brick walls, timber structures and tile roofs are well maintained. The bad: Commercialisation displaced the original residents. May be an inevitable fate for ageing village."

"Like Lijiang and Dali ancient town, this is smaller comparatively. However, still nice walking along the streets admiring the architecture of the buildings here."
