What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for its stunning Lingnan architecture, incredibly detailed carvings, and rich collection of Guangdong folk art. It's considered a highly rated cultural attraction offering a deep dive into traditional Chinese craftsmanship and historical significance. Some note that it can get crowded and may not be ideal for those with mobility issues.
"A splendid witness to the glory days of the Chen clan in Chaozhou, this ancestral hall (陳家寺) is a labour of love that glows with pride in housing candidates preparing for the Imperial Examinations. Being a Chen of Teochew descent myself, despite being generations and thousands of miles removed, I simply had to take a peek.
What started as mere curiosity grew into a historical and cultural adventure. From its intricate carving and moulding works, attention to detail and taste are on full display, complete with copious notes and context so that visitors are left without doubt about the achievements and contributions of this long line of Chens. Artistry, civility, discipline and ethics are demonstrated across a mind-boggling range of materials like porcelain, metals, brick, stone, wood, paints and lacquer work are fashioned into furniture, fittings, walls, gates, arches, roofs, stuccos abd and a variety of ornamental sculptures.
Put aside 2-3 hours for this manmade wonder. While rather inconvenient for people with mobility issues, this hall is accessible by public transport and otherwise extremely walkable; walking shoes work best. It gets crowded, even on weekdays, and can be slightly uncomfortable on warmer, more humid days; so dress light."

"Splendid display of old Guangzhou building architectural mastery. It was an ancestral hall, not a residential mansion. main hall for clan discussion impressive, doors and roof/pillars carvings/painting interesting. some rooms used by people staying there are in display. need about 1-2hours for this place, but definately worth the time spent. near metro station, easy accessibility, entrance ticket can be purchased at main entrance."
