Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Baisha for its authentic, serene atmosphere and genuine Naxi culture, a welcome escape from crowded tourist spots. While the murals are historically significant, the photography restrictions and limited viewing conditions are noted drawbacks. The well-maintained gardens and local culinary experiences are highlights.

"It's located in a very nice ancient town in LiJiang. Serene and not overcrowded. The main painting is kept in one of the hall where photographers taking is not allowed. However, there's schedules of guides explaining the painting which is interesting."

Louise Lee

"Not as crowded compared to lijiang.
Beautiful scenery"

Jinchoon

"To me this is the most beautiful ancient town in Lijiang. It is more down to earth, more genuine and authentic. You see many locals going about their daily business and selling local wares, fruits, vegetables and sundries. It is a quiet and peaceful place without the huge thrum of tourists unlike the other more popular, "modern" ancient town closer to the city. Lots of opportunities to try yak meat and yak products like milk and yogurt. All very delicious. Many little cafes and coffee shops have also mushroomed up here, run by the younger generation."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of Naxi Murals

The Baisha murals are a collection of ancient artworks found within the Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute. These murals are historically significant, dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, and offer a unique glimpse into the religious and cultural beliefs of the Naxi people. They often depict Buddhist figures, local deities, and scenes from daily life, showcasing a blend of Tibetan Buddhist and Han Chinese artistic influences. The intricate details and vibrant colors, despite their age, make them a remarkable testament to the region's artistic heritage.

While the murals are a major draw, it's important to note that photography is prohibited in the main hall where they are housed. This is to protect the delicate artwork from damage caused by flashes and constant light exposure. Visitors are encouraged to attend the guided tours, which provide valuable context and explanations about the historical and artistic importance of each piece. These tours are often led by knowledgeable locals who can share fascinating stories and interpretations of the murals. Reddit

Despite the photography restrictions, the experience of viewing these ancient artworks in person is profound. The dimly lit hall and the sheer age of the paintings create a contemplative atmosphere. For those interested in Chinese art history and ethnic minority cultures, the Baisha murals are an unmissable cultural treasure, offering a deeper understanding of the Naxi civilization. The institute itself also often features embroidery displays, showcasing another significant Naxi art form.

Experiencing Authentic Baisha Ancient Town

Baisha Ancient Town stands out for its authenticity and serene atmosphere, offering a stark contrast to the more commercialized tourist hubs in Lijiang. Unlike its busier counterparts, Baisha retains a genuine feel, with locals actively engaged in their daily routines, selling traditional wares, fresh produce, and local handicrafts. This creates an immersive experience where visitors can observe and interact with the Naxi culture in a more natural setting. The pace of life here is noticeably slower, inviting visitors to wander and absorb the peaceful ambiance.

The town has seen a rise in charming cafes and small shops, often run by younger generations, which blend traditional architecture with modern comforts. This creates a unique dynamic, offering visitors places to relax and enjoy local snacks or coffee while still surrounded by historical charm. Exploring the narrow lanes, you'll discover small eateries serving delicious Naxi specialties, such as yak meat and dairy products, which are highly recommended for an authentic culinary experience. Reddit

For travelers seeking a less crowded and more genuine cultural encounter, Baisha Ancient Town is an ideal destination. It provides a valuable opportunity to connect with the local Naxi community and appreciate a more down-to-earth side of Lijiang. The well-maintained gardens within the Embroidery Institute also offer a tranquil escape, adding to the overall peaceful charm of the area. Reddit
