Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the peaceful atmosphere of the Sun Yat-sen Former Residence and its garden. It offers a tangible connection to a key figure in modern Chinese history. However, some find the museum exhibits lacking in English translations and the restrictions inside the residence (no photos, viewing from doorways) limiting.

"This is the former residence of Dr Sun Yatsen, the revoluntionary leader against the Qing dynasty and first President/Premier of modern China. It is a peaceful garden house covers an area of about 1000sqm. The building is a two-storey European style built at the beginning of 20th century. Oriented south and north, the outer wall of the house was decorated with gray cobbles, and the roof covered with carmine heart-shaped tiles. The square lawn in the front is surrounded by many beautiful flowers.

The residence was bought over by four Canadian-Chinese and presented to Dr Sun in 1918.

On the day of our visit, it was drizzling there but we still enjoy our visit, it's so peaceful and tranquil and yet get up and closed with the displays and exhibits where history comes alive!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of Sun Yat-sen

Sun Yat-sen is revered as the 'Father of the Nation' in China, a pivotal figure in the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. His political philosophy, known as the Three Principles of the People (nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood), profoundly influenced modern Chinese history. This residence served as his home and a base for his revolutionary activities during a crucial period. Reddit

Visitors can gain a deeper appreciation for his ideals and struggles by examining the artifacts and exhibits within the accompanying museum. The residence itself, though modest, offers a tangible connection to his personal life and the era in which he lived. Understanding his historical context enriches the experience of visiting this significant site. Reddit

The residence's European-style architecture reflects the international influences present in Shanghai during the early 20th century. It stands as a testament to a transformative period in Chinese history, making it a must-visit for those interested in modern Chinese history and revolutionary figures. TikTok

Navigating the Site: Museum vs. Residence

Upon arrival, you'll first enter the museum building. This section houses a collection of photographs, documents, and personal belongings that chronicle Sun Yat-sen's life and revolutionary career. While informative, be aware that many exhibits may lack English translations, so a translation app or prior knowledge of Chinese history can enhance your understanding. Reddit

After exploring the museum, you'll proceed to the actual Former Residence next door. Here, you'll be required to wear disposable shoe covers to protect the historical flooring. Visitors can only view the rooms from the doorways, as access inside is restricted to preserve the integrity of the space. Photography is strictly forbidden within the residence itself. Reddit

Despite these limitations, the experience offers a unique glimpse into the personal life of a national hero. The surprisingly simple furnishings and layout provide a stark contrast to the grandeur often associated with political leaders, offering a more human perspective. The surrounding garden also provides a peaceful respite. Reddit
