What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently awestruck by the Guoliang Village Tunnel Road, marveling at the sheer determination of the villagers who carved it by hand. The breathtaking mountain scenery is a major draw, offering incredible photo opportunities. However, some reviews highlight concerns about the distribution of tourism revenue, with mentions of elderly villagers working for very little.
"The tunnel was built with the bare hands of ordinary people, they worked for 7 years seven days a week to finally bring civilization to their hometown! But now these people in their 80s are working for pennies and begging, just because the national park takes all the income for themselves and forgot about those heroes!!!!!!"
Aidana Ababayeva
"40 years ago,to ease the villagers' access to outside world, a group of villagers of Guo Liang Village made Guoliang Tunnel, which is know as Guoliang Cliff Corridor.
Project in 1972 to carve a road into the side of the mountain. They sold their livestock to raise funds to buy tools and materials. Thirteen villagers began the project, with one dying during construction. Without access to power tools, they undertook construction mostly with hammers and chisels. At the most difficult stage, the tunnel progressed at a rate of one metre every three days. It is 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) long, 5 metres (16 ft) tall and 4 metres (13 ft) wide.
The tunnel opened to traffic on 1 May 1977. Its creation has turned the village into a tourist attraction. The area has also been used as a film location."

"It's not easy getting there, but its worth it. We arrived by train to Xinxiang East and then took a taxi to the bottom of the mountain. From there you have to take a bus to the beginning of the tunnel. The tunnel took about 30 min to walk. It will take longer if you are wearing a backpack as it is uphill (slight)."
