Know Before You Go: The Iguaque Sanctuary

The Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is a protected natural reserve, sacred to the Muisca people. Plan for a significant hike, as many visitors report a 3-hour trek to reach key viewpoints like the lagoon. Proper footwear is essential due to potentially slippery and muddy trails, especially after rain.

Navigating to the Sanctuary

Reaching the Iguaque Sanctuary can be tricky. While some online maps might direct you to 'Paramo Iguaque,' this is not the main sanctuary entrance. Look for the 'Visitor Centre Iguaque National Park' on Google Maps. The road to the park is gravel, rocky, and can be very muddy if it rains, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended, though 4WD isn't strictly necessary.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning beauty of Laguna de Iguaque and the unique páramo landscape, calling the challenging hike a rewarding experience. However, many note difficulties in navigation to the correct sanctuary entrance and the demanding, often slippery trail conditions, emphasizing the need for proper gear and preparation.

"3 hour hike to the summit. Very nice views, bring hiking shoes and good jacket."

"Amazing experience for anyone who enjoys a long walk to see an extremely beautiful place! Definitely bring a snack and lots of water!"

Juan Zamudio

"For the DIY hiker - if you are walking from Villa de Leyva to this Paramo Iguaque good for you just keep in mind it is not an entirely natural trail and there are many parts where you will be walking on the road with cars. This hike is not the Sanctuary hike though. This location is not the head of a trail and if you are trying to get there by car thinking is a head trail you will not make it as there is no bridge to cross the river.

We, like many more tourists, were looking for the Sanctuario de Fauna y Flora Iguaque but Google kept sending us to this Paramo Iguaque point. Many people end up doing a hike but don’t make it to the sanctuary.
We finally decided to go back to town and find out more info on the sanctuary which is labeled in Google as: Visitor Centre Iguaque National Park.

The Iguaque National Park is closed as a hanging bridge is in bad need of repairs and is not safe. There is a park ranger that will stop you at the head of the trail. The road to get to the National Park is gravel and rocky, narrow and if raining very muddy. Although a 4WD is not needed, if you are not driving one you might feel like you are abusing your car."
