What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Rio Negro Hot Springs for its beautiful jungle setting, the unique and skin-softening volcanic mud baths, and the relaxing thermal pools. The invigorating hot-and-cold plunge into the river is also a highlight. However, some find the terrain challenging for those with mobility issues, and the on-site buffet has received criticism for its price and quality.
"Rio Negro Hot Springs was a nice experience. The surrounding forest is beautiful and the hanging bridges are lovely. The facilities are not “limited mobility” friendly despite asking the hotel. Grounds are not flat anywhere, entries to the pools is not easy, and the walk in is longer than anticipated - there are benches along the way for rests.
I’m wondering how the pools remain sanitary?
The facility is remote.
Again, it was a very fun experience. Very relaxing. The change rooms are amazing. The price to enter is good."

"The hot springs and volcanic mud baths at the end of the day were pure bliss: steamy thermal pools hidden in the jungle at perfect temperatures (some almost too hot, some just right for soaking forever), plus big buckets of warm, silky volcanic mud you slather on, let bake in the sun until you look like a happy statue, then rinse off under a cold waterfall that makes you scream-laugh. Skin has never felt softer, muscles never more relaxed, and the whole ritual—mud monsters giggling together, then floating in mineral water while steam rises around you—felt like the most luxurious reset button in Costa Rica. Worth every second"

"Hot springs are great, it's just unfortunate that it's part of the hotel. $30 cad buffet that was very sub par and would not let you get your own protein. If you're going to charge outrageous prices and call it a buffet, at least let people grab what they want. Pure greed whoever runs that part of the hotel.
The hot springs itself is very clean with lots of staff to help but be aware that the signs for temp aren't always accurate. Also a 10min drive from hotel."

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
The entry price is generally considered good value. If you are staying at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin, access may be included or at a reduced rate.
While advance booking might not be strictly necessary, it's always a good idea to check with your hotel or tour provider, especially during peak season.
The entrance fee typically covers access to the various hot spring pools, the volcanic mud baths, and the option to rinse off in the river or showers. Towels are usually provided.

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
There are several pools with varying temperatures. Some can be quite hot, so check the temperature signs, though they aren't always perfectly accurate. Experiment to find your favorite!
You'll find large buckets of warm, silky volcanic mud. Slather it all over your body, let it dry in the sun, and then rinse off under a cold waterfall or in the river. Your skin will feel amazing!
While there isn't a strict recommended order, many visitors enjoy the mud bath first, followed by soaking in the hot springs, and then a refreshing dip in the cold river.
Clean changing rooms with lockers are available. There are also showers for rinsing off, though many prefer the natural creek. Benches are placed along the walking paths.
Outside food and drinks are generally not permitted, especially if you are not staying at the associated hotel. There is a buffet restaurant on-site, though some reviews mention it being overpriced.
