Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Makarska's beautiful Riva promenade, with its scenic waterfront, numerous cafes, and stunning mountain backdrop. The charming Old Town offers a delightful contrast with its quaint streets. While it can get crowded, many find the atmosphere pleasant, especially outside peak season.

"Really pleasant promenade and walking spot by the port. You've got a long, wide walkway, lots of benches, plenty of cafés, and beautiful views over the water. The whole scene is framed by the mountains in the background and a nearby park filled with lush green trees — the color contrast is stunning. Easily one of the most scenic ports in the area.

If you’re after something smaller, check out Brela to the north — a bit more low-key. Baška Voda has its own vibe too, and further south you’ve got Tučepi and Podgora. Each spot brings something different.

Makarska, of course, is the biggest port around, with the most services, restaurants, and shops open. For years I thought it was just another overcrowded, overly commercial place — but maybe that was just timing. Visiting in mid-May, without the summer crowds, it felt completely different. The whole atmosphere was great. We’ll definitely be back."

"It was a bit overcrowded but the sea still was nice and clean."

Exploring the Makarska Riva

The Makarska Riva is the heart of the town's social life, a wide and elegant promenade stretching along the harbor. Lined with numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops, it's the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, people-watching, or enjoying a refreshing drink with a view of the Adriatic Sea. The scene is dramatically framed by the imposing Biokovo mountain range in the background, creating a stunning natural amphitheater. Even during busy periods, the Riva maintains a pleasant atmosphere, especially when visited outside the peak summer months. Reddit

Many visitors find the Riva to be one of the most scenic ports in the region, appreciating the blend of natural beauty and urban vibrancy. The presence of benches offers ample opportunity to sit back and soak in the atmosphere. For a unique perspective, consider a short submarine tour from the port, which offers underwater views and a different angle of the coastline. Reddit

While the Riva is lively, it's also a gateway to the charming Makarska Old Town. A short walk inland reveals a network of narrow, winding streets, traditional stone houses, and quaint squares, offering a more intimate glimpse into the town's history and local life. The contrast between the bustling waterfront and the quiet, historic alleys is one of Makarska's distinct charms.

A Taste of Makarska

Makarska offers a delightful culinary experience, with a wide array of dining options catering to various tastes and budgets. The Riva promenade is dotted with restaurants and cafes serving everything from fresh seafood caught daily to traditional Dalmatian dishes. Expect to find grilled fish, octopus salad, and local pasta specialties. Many establishments offer outdoor seating, allowing you to dine with a view of the sea and the picturesque harbor. Reddit

For a more authentic experience, venture into the Old Town where you can discover hidden konobas (traditional taverns) that often serve more rustic and regional cuisine. These smaller eateries can provide a more intimate dining setting and a chance to savor local wines and olive oils. While the Riva might have slightly higher prices due to its prime location, exploring the side streets can lead to more affordable and equally delicious meals. Reddit

Beyond full meals, Makarska also boasts numerous bakeries and ice cream parlors, perfect for a quick snack or a sweet treat. Whether you're looking for a leisurely lunch, a romantic dinner, or a casual coffee break, Makarska provides ample opportunities to indulge in the flavors of the Dalmatian coast.
