As someone who watches true crime cases this was such a different experience- I knew of most of the cases but yet it left an unsettling feeling while walking- the owner was so kind to us and very respectful with the way he approached this… #florence #thingstodoflorence #serialkillermuseum #serialkillermuseumflorence #truecrime

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Tortureum Museum a small but impactful experience, particularly for history enthusiasts. The interactive tablets are highly praised for providing detailed, multilingual context to the historical torture devices. While the intentionally dim lighting enhances the macabre atmosphere, some find it too dark to see clearly. The museum's emotional resonance, amplified by a powerful final video, leaves a lasting impression.

"Definitely recommended - especially for history lovers or else those who perhaps are interested to get to know a bit about the dark side of mankind. They gave us tablets which explained each piece thoroughly - which definitely made our experience much better. Also, this was available in 5 or 6 languages. Tickets are fairly cheap at around €6 each (there are good deals for families and groups) - so definitely recommend giving it a go if you're anywhere around Zagreb's upper town 😀"

"We had such a good experience at the museum. It was really interesting to see all the collection, and thanks to the interactive tablets provided - we could understand better how, when and why each piece was used. It's a vivid reminder of the dark history of mankind - the sad but true (ongoing) history. Definitely recommend visiting whilst in Zagreb!"

"I loved this odd place. It is very small and is too dark. I understand the need for darkness to affect the mood required, but it's too dark to see what you're looking at adequately and to see where you're going EXACTLY. There is a short, silent video at the end. I recognized many images from the "Faces of Death" videos of my youth. It's nothing gruesome but conveys the terror we as humans are capable of inflicting on others (and filming it). I left with tears in my eyes. Bravo to the creators for coming up with this idea that hits you right in the gut IF you watch the video. Most people pass it by. Don't."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Interactive Tablet Experience

One of the most praised aspects of the Tortureum Museum is the inclusion of interactive tablets. These devices are not just for show; they are essential for understanding the historical context, purpose, and usage of each torture instrument. Visitors can select from multiple languages, ensuring accessibility for a diverse range of tourists. The tablets provide detailed information that transforms the viewing experience from simply looking at grim objects to learning about the dark history of human cruelty. This feature is frequently highlighted by visitors as a key reason for the museum's impact and recommendation. Reddit

The tablets are crucial for appreciating the historical significance and avoiding a purely gruesome encounter. They bridge the gap between the physical artifacts and the stories behind them, making the museum a more educational and thought-provoking destination. Without them, the experience might be significantly less engaging and informative. Reddit

Atmosphere and Lighting

The Tortureum Museum intentionally employs very dim lighting to create a specific, macabre atmosphere. This deliberate choice aims to evoke the somber and often terrifying nature of the historical periods and practices depicted. While this enhances the mood and can be quite effective in drawing visitors into the historical context, it also presents a practical challenge: it can be too dark to clearly see the exhibits and navigate the space safely. Reddit

Visitors often comment on this aspect, with some appreciating the atmospheric effect and others finding it hinders their ability to fully examine the instruments. The museum's creators likely balanced the desire for a powerful atmosphere with the need for visitors to engage with the displays. The interactive tablets play a vital role in mitigating the issues caused by the low light, allowing visitors to learn about the exhibits even if visual clarity is compromised. Reddit

Emotional Impact and the Final Video

Beyond the display of instruments, the Tortureum Museum aims to leave a lasting emotional impression. Many visitors report being deeply moved, with some even shedding tears after their visit. This emotional resonance is often attributed to the stark reminder of the cruelty humans are capable of inflicting. The museum doesn't shy away from this dark aspect of history, presenting it in a way that prompts reflection. Reddit

A significant contributor to this impact is the short, silent video shown at the end of the exhibition. While not gruesome, this video is designed to powerfully convey the terror and suffering associated with torture. It's a critical component of the museum's narrative, and visitors are strongly encouraged not to overlook it, as it encapsulates the profound emotional weight of the entire experience. Reddit
