"A Must-Do in Curaçao: The Newly Remodeled Jewish Museum Curaçao
Whether you’re a local or visiting Curaçao, there’s a powerful, moving experience you shouldn’t miss, the newly expanded Curaçao Jewish Museum, located right next to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. I visited the museum before its renovation… and wow, revisiting it now feels like stepping into an entirely new world of history, emotion, and reflection. The museum has grown, literally and figuratively, now spread across three immersive floors, each telling stories that resonate far beyond the island. I recommend to start on the third floor. Here you'll find the brand-new Anne Frank exhibit. I’ve read her diary before, but seeing it come to life like this, the visuals, the story of her family’s struggle in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, it’s a different experience. It’s raw, emotional, and a reminder of how important it is to keep telling these stories. On the second floor, there’s a story that might surprise many, and that is the story of George Maduro. A Curaçao-born hero who fought during WWII in The Netherlands. His bravery, his betrayal, and his tragic end. You can see artifacts that belonged to George Maduro, letters, uniform and more. Once you see this exhibit, you will never forget it. On the first floor, you’ll find literature, artifacts, and historical items that tie it all together in the gift shop. Some great pieces connected to these new exhibits. The museum also highlights four local Curaçao youth, sharing and learning from their own experiences with bullying, exclusion and discrimination. It’s a powerful bridge between past and present. A reminder that injustice didn’t end with Anne Frank. It’s still around us today and so is resilience.
What I loved most about the museum? You can walk through the exhibits at your own pace, and with the use of the digital tour guide, it makes everything even more engaging. The digital tour guide is available in multiple languages. The whole museum is air-conditioned too, which definitely helps while taking it all in. There’s an elevator (a little slow but super handy), and the team is still putting the final touches on some areas, but everything’s up and running. And yes, the original museum and the synagogue are still open to explore. Remember, the synagogue is a place of worship, please be respectful. I spent about two hours in the museum, honestly, I would do it again. It’s emotional, educational, and so beautifully done.
This is not just a museum — it’s an experience. A 10/10 for me. The museum is open Monday through Friday, from 09:00 to 16:30. Last entry is at 15:30. Entrance for adults, 13+ is $18/Cg 32,50. Children 0-3 years are free and children between 4-12 is $9/Cg 16,-. Local Residents with I.D. Cg 5,- Add this visit to your Curaçao itinerary. You won’t regret it.

"Lovely museum and synagogue! There are no photos allowed in the museum itself, but they let me take a few of the shul itself, which I’ve included here. Make sure you don’t miss the museum, however! When you do go, be sure to read all the commentary on the artifacts and walls. The history of our community in Curaçao is just fascinating. Check out the videos too! It’s just so fascinating and fantastic to see this part of our heritage and feel the energy of thousands of our ancestors who have been coming to this magical place for literally hundreds of years.
