Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis for its incredibly well-preserved 11th-century Byzantine frescoes and its unique 'roof' architecture. The free entry and peaceful mountain setting are also highlighted as major draws. Some note that photography inside is restricted and the entrance can be a bit hard to find.

"Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis
Kakopetria, Nicosia District, Cyprus

The church of "San Nicholas of the Roof" (also known in English as St. Nicholas of the Roof), is located at a short distance from the inhabited center of Kakopetria, in the Solea valley at about 700 meters elevation. The structure is included in the UNESCO site "Painted Churches in."

Mazhar Abbas

"Ancient church with incredible frescos. Definitely worth a visit."

Andreas Economou

"This is one of only ten churches which is called the painted churches. They are enlisted on the UNESCO world heritage list due to the interior paintings. The current paintings are restored and repainted many times, but researchers believe they have found the original ones, and therefore these churches are significant carriers of history. The entrance is hard to see as it suddenly appears around a bend, use - and trust - your GPS 😜! Entrance to the church is free, but they do accept donations and there is a souvernir shop at the premises. Unless very religious I think 10-15 minutes are adequate here."
