What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Dolní náměstí for its stunning Baroque architecture, particularly the Marian Plague Column and ornate fountains. The historic palaces and the overall 'vibe of history' are frequently highlighted as major draws. While generally well-received, some may find it less grand than its Upper Square counterpart, though still a beautiful and significant landmark.
"Dolni Namesti (Lower Square) in my opinion is just as good and beautiful as Horni Namesti (Upper Square).
The Marian Plague Column, towering in the middle of the square like a petrified finger of time, and two beautiful Baroque fountains that look like ever-opened eyes of the old square – all of this framed by numerous historic houses and palaces that were built by rich townsfolk and noblemen.
Soon you will find out that the unchallenged spectacle of the square is the Marian Column, the first memorial built by the grateful townsfolk after the plague epidemic in the 18th century. Adorned by statues of eight saints including Saint Pauline, the city’s patron, the column is crowned by a statue of Saint Mary. On the opposite end of the square there are the Neptune and Jupiter fountains. You should not miss the Renaissance Hauenschield’s Palace – house no. 38 – decorated with mythical figures from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. W. A. Mozart stayed in this house during his visit to Moravia."
