What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the monastery's stunning interiors, especially the ornate church and the world-renowned library, highlighting the historical significance of artifacts like the Zavis Cross. However, some guests have been disappointed by limited English tour availability and occasional negative experiences with guides, which can detract from the overall visit.
"Today I visited the Monastery at Vyšší Brod with my family. We had purchased tickets from a lovely lady at the visitors center, cash only, reservations on line available for groups of 8+. Our guide showed us the crypt, and then we climbed up a steep winding staircase in a narrow turret to a special chamber to see the unique and most beautiful 13th century bejeweled Zavis cross. Later our tour continued inside the church, where we joined a new group with an elderly guide. My enjoyment of the beautifully ornate interior was marred by our new guide’s rambling on about how American tourists misbehave in the church, he actually proceeded to describe all their different antics for uncomfortable several minutes instead of telling us about the history of the church. Mind you, our group of 10 communicated in perfect Czech as did the guide. He later commented on several statues and altars and we proceeded toward the picture gallery and the library. While waiting for a group in front of us to move on, the guide started another hate speech about Americans, this time Texas farmers and how they are rich and want to buy everything. He mentioned, that he also does the English commented tours and is writing a book about Americans. I am not sure why he was carrying on with his inappropriate ranting, but for me, he spoiled the whole tour. I tried to quietly walk away from him and concentrate on the beautiful ornate decor and the many ancient books, wishing there was another group I could switch to. The rest of the people listened to his historical commentary, he seemed to be well prepared, but when he started again making snide remarks about Americans, I could not get out fast enough. So when you get an elderly stocky guide with unkept dark hair, gray layer on top, mustache and beard, watch out, he really is a racist."

"Great Church and monastery, there's a tour where you can see old library and maybe see some monks actually living and working there. Worth the tour. If you're allergic, beware and take your medicine, there's tons of dust especially on the books (and there are many of them)"

"Unfortunately, in November, it is pretty much closed. Nice area, nice surroundings, nice view. I would describe it as an enjoyable walk."
