What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Laguna Amarilla El Altar as a spectacular and worthwhile destination, despite its challenging nature. The vibrant colors of the lagoon and the majestic mountain scenery are highlights, though the demanding, muddy hike and potential for difficult weather conditions are frequently mentioned drawbacks.
"A beautiful place, a very demanding hike! It's recommended that you train beforehand, do a full cardio workout, and arrange to rent mules so you don't carry too much weight. And stay in the cabins, and get up early enough to see the sunrise there. Bring rubber boots with extra insoles, otherwise your feet will hurt terribly. Bring a first aid kit, especially for blisters or sprained heels, Voltaren, ibuprofen, and paracetamol for more severe pain. The site is worth a thousand miles; it's spectacular!"

"The entire experience was wonderful, a hike of approximately 8 to 9 hours at a moderate pace. The rains and the passing of horses and people on the trail made the muddy trail even more difficult. But I think it was worth it!"

"To reach Laguna Amarilla, we drove through Penipe to La Candelaria. It's important to obtain a permit to enter the lagoon through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MAE).
We began the hike at Hacienda Releche at an elevation of 2,980 m, and the highest point we reached was 4,223 m.
Although the trail information indicates it's 11 km to the lagoon, it's actually 12 km to the refuge in the Collantes Valley, with an ascent of 1,020 m. The trail is very muddy, so it's essential to wear rubber boots for the trail and hiking shoes for walking to the campsite. It took us 5 hours to reach the campsite, and from the campsite to the lagoon, it's 1 hour and 30 minutes. It's an additional 1.5 km, so you need to consider this part.
It's best to camp for two nights to fully enjoy the scenery and make the hike less demanding. But one night is enough."
