Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia for its incredibly well-preserved collection of artifacts from the 1920s and beyond, offering a fascinating journey through history. The affordable entrance fee and the impressive social area on the second floor are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, some guests find the guided tours, which are mandatory, to be conducted too quickly and primarily in Spanish, making comprehension difficult. Inconsistent photography policies also sometimes cause frustration. Reddit

"The entrance fee for the museum is $2 as of July 2024. Apparently you cannot just walk around by yourself... You need to receive the tour from a tour guide, which is fine, but my tour guide spoke Spanish so quickly that it was difficult to understand much of what she said. Most of the tour was pointing out the expensive things that the owner of the house had acquired over the years, which is kind of sad since hardly anyone could have afforded such things at that time. Nevertheless, it is an interesting tour and it's recommended if you have extra time to spend in Quito."

"The fare is not worth the exhibit, I would skip this place and just buy a Pilsener with a quimbolito instead."

Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia can be an interesting outing for families, offering a unique glimpse into a bygone era. The sheer variety of objects, from antique furniture to curious trinkets, can capture a child's imagination. However, the mandatory guided tour, primarily in Spanish and potentially fast-paced, might be challenging for younger children who require more engagement or have shorter attention spans. Reddit

A Glimpse into the Past

Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia offers a unique opportunity to step back in time. The museum is housed in the former residence of María Augusta Urrutia, a prominent Ecuadorian figure. The collection showcases a wide array of objects from the 1920s and other periods, reflecting her life and travels. Visitors can expect to see furniture, art, personal belongings, and decorative items, all meticulously preserved to give an authentic feel of the era. TikTokReddit

One of the most striking aspects of the museum is the sheer volume and variety of items. From everyday objects to exquisite pieces collected from around the world, the museum provides a rich tapestry of history and personal narrative. The social area on the second floor is frequently mentioned as a highlight, offering a glimpse into the entertaining spaces of the past. This immersive experience allows visitors to connect with history on a more personal level, imagining the life and times of María Augusta Urrutia. Reddit

While the museum is highly praised for its preservation and content, it's important to note the guided tour requirement. These tours are typically conducted in Spanish, and while guides are often attentive, the pace can be rapid. Visitors should also be aware of potential restrictions on photography within the museum. Despite these considerations, the Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia remains a highly recommended destination for those interested in history, culture, and unique museum experiences in Quito. Reddit

Navigating the Museum Experience

Visiting Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia involves a few key considerations to ensure a smooth experience. The most significant is the mandatory guided tour. Unlike many museums where you can wander freely, here you'll be led by a guide who will share the history and details of the exhibits. This can be a great way to learn, but it's important to be aware that tours are predominantly in Spanish. Reddit

For those who don't speak Spanish fluently, communication might be a challenge. Some visitors have noted that guides speak very quickly, making it difficult to grasp all the information. If you're keen on understanding every detail, consider going with someone who speaks Spanish or preparing some key phrases beforehand. The guides are generally attentive and aim to make the visit enjoyable, but the language barrier is a common point of feedback. Reddit

Photography is another aspect that can cause confusion. While some reviews indicate that photos were allowed, others mention guides prohibiting cell phone use for pictures. It's best practice to confirm the current policy with your guide upon starting the tour. Respecting these guidelines ensures a positive experience for everyone and helps preserve the museum's artifacts for future visitors. TikTokReddit
