Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia for its incredibly well-preserved collection of artifacts from the 1920s and beyond, offering a fascinating journey through history. The affordable entrance fee and the impressive social area on the second floor are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, some guests find the guided tours, which are mandatory, to be conducted too quickly and primarily in Spanish, making comprehension difficult. Inconsistent photography policies also sometimes cause frustration.
"The entrance fee for the museum is $2 as of July 2024. Apparently you cannot just walk around by yourself... You need to receive the tour from a tour guide, which is fine, but my tour guide spoke Spanish so quickly that it was difficult to understand much of what she said. Most of the tour was pointing out the expensive things that the owner of the house had acquired over the years, which is kind of sad since hardly anyone could have afforded such things at that time. Nevertheless, it is an interesting tour and it's recommended if you have extra time to spend in Quito."

"The fare is not worth the exhibit, I would skip this place and just buy a Pilsener with a quimbolito instead."

A Glimpse into the Past
One of the most striking aspects of the museum is the sheer volume and variety of items. From everyday objects to exquisite pieces collected from around the world, the museum provides a rich tapestry of history and personal narrative. The social area on the second floor is frequently mentioned as a highlight, offering a glimpse into the entertaining spaces of the past. This immersive experience allows visitors to connect with history on a more personal level, imagining the life and times of María Augusta Urrutia.
While the museum is highly praised for its preservation and content, it's important to note the guided tour requirement. These tours are typically conducted in Spanish, and while guides are often attentive, the pace can be rapid. Visitors should also be aware of potential restrictions on photography within the museum. Despite these considerations, the Casa Museo María Augusta Urrutia remains a highly recommended destination for those interested in history, culture, and unique museum experiences in Quito.
Navigating the Museum Experience
For those who don't speak Spanish fluently, communication might be a challenge. Some visitors have noted that guides speak very quickly, making it difficult to grasp all the information. If you're keen on understanding every detail, consider going with someone who speaks Spanish or preparing some key phrases beforehand. The guides are generally attentive and aim to make the visit enjoyable, but the language barrier is a common point of feedback.
Photography is another aspect that can cause confusion. While some reviews indicate that photos were allowed, others mention guides prohibiting cell phone use for pictures. It's best practice to confirm the current policy with your guide upon starting the tour. Respecting these guidelines ensures a positive experience for everyone and helps preserve the museum's artifacts for future visitors.
