"This is the oldest church in Quito, dating back to the sixteenth century. The church was established and is still maintained by Franciscan monks. It is free to visit, and offers daily masses. Due to earthquakes, it's been repaired several times over the centuries. Photography is not allowed inside the church. It is the center for the Plaza de San Francisco, which is Quito's historic center. Outside in the plaza you can purchase handmade goods from local vendors, listen to street musicians or grab a snack. Our group visited with a local guide which was very helpful in understanding the history, art and architecture of this landmark. I recommend visiting the adjacent Franciscan convent and museum of religious artifacts."
