What a moment having this curious Carunculated Caracara come and check me out just as I arrived at the summit of Rucu Pichincha volcano outside Quito (although I think it’s because people feed them). Such intelligent and elegant birds! And if you haven’t already, I’d urge everyone to read “A Most Remarkable Creature” by @jonathanmeiburg about caracaras; it’s one of my absolute favorite bird books ...

Reviews Summary

Rucu Pichincha is a highly rewarding hike offering spectacular views of Quito and the surrounding Andes. Visitors praise the magnificent scenery and biodiversity, noting it rarely feels overcrowded. However, the challenging altitude and unpredictable weather require thorough preparation, and some recommend a helmet due to falling rocks.

"Wonderful hike. You can take the cable car up to the viewpoint and the famous swings and start your hike from there. Without acclimating it’s too strenuous for most sea dwellers, but if you’re lucky and fit you’re in for a big treat. I love going to this place. The spaceousness, mountains and the biodiversity are magnificent. Although there are always other hikers, it never feels crowded. Be prepared for heat, cold, wind, rain, sun, gravel and mud all in one day. And bring enough water and food."

"A challenging hike for the average hiker, reaching to the high ~4700 meters summit. The trail has a lot of beautiful birds escorting you on the way (please don’t feed them). The view from the top is beautiful (although it might be cloudy). Stay safe with the elevation."

Yes, you can take local buses or taxis to reach the TelefériQo station in Quito. Some travelers mention taking a company bus to get closer to the cable car. TikTok

The price for the TelefériQo can vary, but it's a significant part of the journey. It's advisable to check current rates before your visit. TikTok

The summit of Rucu Pichincha reaches approximately 4,696 meters (15,407 feet) above sea level. TikTok+1

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

You'll need to purchase a ticket for the TelefériQo to ascend to Cruz Loma. There isn't a separate entrance fee for the hiking trails themselves once you're at the top. TikTok

Operating hours can change seasonally. It's best to check the official TelefériQo website or local listings for the most up-to-date information before your visit. TikTok

While not always necessary, booking in advance can sometimes save time, especially during peak tourist seasons. Check the official channels for booking options. TikTok

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

While the TelefériQo ride itself is an exciting experience for children, the hike to the Rucu Pichincha summit is generally not recommended for young children due to the altitude, challenging terrain, and potential for falling rocks. The strenuous nature of the climb can be overwhelming for little ones. TikTok

However, families can still enjoy the area around Cruz Loma, the upper station of the TelefériQo. There are often scenic viewpoints and sometimes even swings that offer great photo opportunities with stunning backdrops. This allows for a taste of the mountain's beauty without the demanding trek to the summit. Always assess your child's stamina and comfort level with heights and exertion before considering any part of the hike.

💰 Budget Travelers

The main cost for a budget traveler heading to Rucu Pichincha is the TelefériQo ticket. While it's an expense, it significantly reduces the hiking time and effort, making the summit accessible without needing multiple days of trekking from the base. TikTok

To save money, pack your own food and water for the hike. There are no vendors on the mountain, so bringing a packed lunch and plenty of snacks will prevent costly impulse buys. Consider traveling in a group to potentially share taxi costs to the TelefériQo station if public transport isn't convenient for your schedule. Reddit

The 'Paso de la Muerte' adds an element of thrill for couples who enjoy a bit of adrenaline. Remember to pack layers and be prepared for changing weather to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable adventure together. Instagram

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Altitude and Acclimatization

Rucu Pichincha's summit sits at a formidable 4,696 meters (15,407 feet). For visitors coming from sea level, this altitude can cause significant discomfort, including headaches, nausea, and fatigue, commonly known as altitude sickness. The key to a successful and enjoyable hike is proper acclimatization. This means spending at least 2-3 days in Quito (around 2,850 meters) before attempting the climb. During this time, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and take it easy. Listen to your body; if you feel unwell, don't push yourself further up the mountain. Reddit

Many travelers share their experiences of underestimating the altitude. Some found that even with a few days in Quito, the ascent was still challenging. It's a gradual process, and some individuals may need more time to adjust. If you have pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, consult your doctor before planning this trek. The goal is to enjoy the stunning views, not to suffer through the climb. TikTokReddit

Navigating the Trail and Safety

The trail to Rucu Pichincha summit is well-marked for the most part, especially the initial section from Cruz Loma. However, as you get closer to the summit, the terrain becomes more rugged and involves scrambling over rocks. The infamous 'Paso de la Muerte' (Pass of Death) is a section that requires careful footwork and a good sense of balance. TikTok+1

Safety is paramount. A significant concern raised by reviewers is the risk of falling rocks, especially in busier sections. Wearing a helmet is strongly advised, as a falling stone can cause serious injury. Reddit If you're not an experienced hiker or climber, consider hiring a local guide. Guides not only ensure your safety but also provide valuable insights into the mountain's history, geology, and flora and fauna. Informing someone about your hiking plans and expected return time is also a crucial safety measure. TikTok

Wildlife and Biodiversity

Beyond the dramatic volcanic landscapes, Rucu Pichincha is home to a surprising amount of biodiversity. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the various species that inhabit the slopes. Notably, the Carunculated Caracara (also known as Curiquingue) is often spotted near the summit, sometimes approaching hikers out of curiosity. Instagram+1 While these birds are fascinating, it's important to remember they are wild animals and should not be fed, as this can disrupt their natural behavior and diet. Reddit

The varied microclimates on the mountain support different types of vegetation, from hardy grasses to more specialized high-altitude plants. The experience of hiking through these changing environments, with the possibility of spotting unique wildlife, adds another layer of richness to the Rucu Pichincha trek. Instagram
