What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Catherine offers a profoundly rewarding experience, with the sunrise from the summit being a highlight for many. Visitors praise the stunning views, the sense of accomplishment, and the unique cultural interactions with the local Bedouin community. However, the climb is physically demanding, and the cold at the summit requires careful preparation with warm clothing.
"Amaizing. Camels stars beduins, mountain. We came from Dahab by car. Few check points on the way. We start at 11.30pm, 2.00am start the hike.. it abou 3 hours up on the very nice trail...you get a guide at the entrance fo 800ep per car +tip. On the way you will be offered camel ride up or down (easy and nice experience). Everithing is offered by "jebeliya"- moutain peple beduin tribe. Once you are up the moutain take a tea in the shalter, under blanked if cold...to wait for sunrise on top. At the end you can visit monestary in the morning. After we were lucky to ve envited to Beduins house in the city for a tea. Amazing to se all the womens preparing the weding... they have such big hearts! We meet the family and this is amazing.
Take notice that every cent you spend on the way up the mountaing, goes for family and scholing (guys have to provide for family) they are "modern beduins" as they call eachother.
I recomend to spend one night in st catarina we were very tired- no sleep."

"We did a full-day hiking trip to Mount Catherine (to all who don't know, Mount Catherine is the highest point in Egypt, instead of Mount Sinai). The beginning of the ascending part was a bit steep but once you passed 1800m elevation, everything became really smooth. We descended after a 2-hour rest and experienced some bouldering type of trail which made the trip even more fun.
We booked our trip via Sinai Hikes, which to my knowledge, is the only guide agency for anyone who wants to hike there. And I strongly recommend going with Ahmed, our guide this time."

"Climbing the mountain was very tiring due to the lack of oxygen as you go up high, but when you reach the top you will be very happy of what you have achieved and amazed by the terrific view and sights. But make sure to wear many layers and a good jacket because at the most top of the mountain even wearing 5 layers of clothing two jackets, gloves and a mask made me feel every breeze and cold 😂, although don’t forget to bring sugary sweets and power drinks to help you continue your adventure, and of course not to mention take as many photos as you can.
Good Luck"

The Ascent: A Journey to the Summit
Reaching the summit of Mount Catherine, Egypt's highest point at 2,629 meters (8,625 ft), is an accomplishment rewarded with unparalleled views. The feeling of standing atop the Sinai Peninsula, especially as the sun paints the sky with vibrant colors, is described as indescribable and deeply peaceful. The descent can be quicker, and some sections offer a more adventurous, bouldering-like experience. Remember that the air thins at higher altitudes, so staying hydrated and taking breaks is crucial for a comfortable climb.
St. Catherine's Monastery: A Historical Sanctuary
The monastery is a testament to centuries of faith and resilience, offering a profound glimpse into religious history. The surrounding community, primarily the local Jebeliya Bedouin tribe, plays a vital role in its upkeep and history. Engaging with the local culture, perhaps over a cup of tea, can offer a deeper appreciation for the people who have lived in this sacred landscape for generations.
