What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking, otherworldly views from Kallur Lighthouse, calling the hike well worth the effort and fee. The dramatic cliffs and ocean vistas are highlights, though some find the trail muddy and slippery, and the ferry and hiking costs a bit steep. The optional cliff-edge walk offers unparalleled photo opportunities for the adventurous.
"200 Dkk fee to get here. Pricey but the views were beautiful. The hike was not technically challenging, but can get muddy and slippery at times. Heights and exposure are optional at the end (only if you want to venture onto the cliffs past the lighthouse), but best to brave it if able for the better views!"

"The Kallur Lighthouse is among the most visited attractions in the breathtaking Faroe Islands. Located on the long and narrow Kalsoy Island, the views you get here are otherworldly.
You can reach it via ferry from Klaksvik.
The small white and red painted lighthouse is nestled on the northernmost tip of the Kalsoy Island. Everyone wanting to visit the scenery will go for a hike. Kallur Lighthouse was built in 1927 and is now steadily growing in popularity.
The lighthouse sits on the northernmost point of Kalsoy Island.
When in the Faroe Islands, you need absolutely to set aside a full day for this attraction. In order to reach the lighthouse, you will need to take a short ferry ride (20 minutes) from Klaksvik in the Bordoy island, drive through 4 narrow tunnels and eventually hike for an hour.
Kalsoy Island is surrounded entirely by the North Atlantic Ocean. The only way to get to the island is by jumping on the small Kalsoy Island ferry (the ferry is called Sam) that departs from the town of Klaksvík on Borðoy Island.
From Kallur Lightghouse you can see the northernmost parts of the islands of Kunoy, Vidoy on Eastern side and Eysturoy on the Western side.
Once you reach Kalsoy Island, make your way north passing through four narrow tunnels along the way. In the end, you will reach the most northernly settlement on the island, Trøllanes.
It will cost you 200 DKK per adult to hike to the lighthouse but it's well worth it.
All hikes to the public lighthouse start from Trøllanes. The hike from the Trøllanes to Kallur Lighthouse takes one hour each way.
The hike to the lighthouse is moderate in difficulty. Initially, the hike is a bit steep without being scaring at all. Then you will walk along the sheep path until you reach the scenery where the lighthouse is located.
Most people will find the hike fairly easy. The scenery you get at the end of the hike is worth every minute of the effort. Expect mud on the path along the route to the lighthouse.

"We visited May 2025. There is a parking lot on the left side of the road before you get into town. There is a red house near the start of the trail that collects the hiking fee. The trail out to the lighthouse is uphill. The trail needs some maintenance as it gets very muddy and is difficult to traverse in some areas. Walking sticks were necessary to keep balance through the muddy ridges. The view of the ocean and cliffs near the lighthouse are spectacular and worth the hike."

The Iconic Hike to Kallur Lighthouse
As you ascend, the landscape opens up to reveal increasingly dramatic views of the North Atlantic Ocean. The sheer cliffs and the vast expanse of water create a truly awe-inspiring panorama. While the main path is manageable, the final approach to the lighthouse involves navigating narrow ridges with significant drops. While it's possible to stay back from the edge, braving these sections offers the most iconic and breathtaking perspectives.
It's important to note that this hike is on private land, and a fee (around 200 DKK) is charged for access. This fee helps maintain the trail and supports the local community. The popularity of the lighthouse, amplified by its appearance in the James Bond film 'No Time To Die,' means it can get crowded, particularly during peak summer months. Planning your visit for weekdays or early mornings can help mitigate the crowds.
Navigating Kalsoy Island: Ferries and Tunnels
Once you disembark on Kalsoy Island, you'll need to travel north towards the village of Tröllanes. This involves driving through a series of four narrow, single-lane tunnels. These tunnels are a unique feature of Kalsoy and require careful navigation, often involving waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. The drive itself is scenic, offering glimpses of the island's rugged interior.
While it's possible to visit Kalsoy Island using public transport (buses connect the ferry terminal to Tröllanes), many visitors opt to bring a car. Having your own vehicle provides greater flexibility in managing your time, especially if you plan to explore other parts of the island or need to catch a specific ferry back. Be aware that parking in Tröllanes can be limited during peak times.
