Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning, secluded lake and the scenic coastal path of the Hvannhagi hike. The free access and breathtaking views make it a highlight for many. However, some find the descent to the lake steeper and more challenging than expected, especially in wet conditions.

"If you’re taking 1 hike on the island this would be the one. To visit this scenic hike simply park your car on Ovarivegur will save you some walk uphill. Simply follow the orange trail marks in the beginning and you will reach a sheep gate then it starts to become more difficult. The path goes along mid-hill with ups and downs. You will arrive another gate and only few minutes away from the lake! Trail would be muddy and technical after rain, so be careful when you descend to the lakeside. Took me about 2-3hours for a return trip."

"Very nice short hike to a secluded lake. The path along the coastline west is very scenic and the lake itself is pretty."

Rene Severs

"Beautiful hike! The hike is free (unlike many around the Faroe Islands), with a lovely view of the lake right next to the open ocean. You can park in town or drive further right up to the beginning of the trail, however note that there is only space for maybe 4-5 cars here. The trail itself is marked with orange posts most of the way - it is advertised as moderate in difficulty and suitable for children, however it was harder than I expected. The beginning is fairly straightforward, however the descent down to the lake is somewhat steep, uneven, muddy, and slippery. You can return via the same path, or by hiking up through Frostgjógv Gorge - this is fairly steep and the terrain consists of grass and then rocks (see attached pictures). Best to allow 2-2.5 hours round trip depending on fitness and pace."

Navigating the Hvannhagi Trail

The Hvannhagi hike is a rewarding experience on Suðuroy, known for its secluded lake and dramatic coastal views. The trail begins with a relatively easy walk, often on a paved or well-trodden path, leading towards the start of the more challenging section. Orange markers guide you initially, but it's crucial to pay attention to the terrain as you progress. Reddit

The most demanding part of the hike is the descent to the lake. This section can be steep, uneven, and particularly muddy or slippery after rainfall. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are highly recommended to navigate this safely. The effort is well worth it, as the lake itself, situated right by the open ocean, offers a truly unique and tranquil setting. Reddit

For those seeking an alternative route back, consider hiking up through Frostgjógv Gorge. This path is also steep and involves navigating grass and rocky terrain, providing a different perspective of the surrounding landscape. Allow approximately 2-3 hours for the entire round trip, factoring in time for photos and rest stops.

The Unique Landscape of Suðuroy

Suðuroy, the southernmost island of the Faroe Islands, offers a distinct landscape characterized by its rugged cliffs, green valleys, and a sense of remoteness. The Hvannhagi hike is a prime example of this wild beauty, showcasing a secluded lake that feels like a hidden gem. The island's geology contributes to its dramatic scenery, with ancient volcanic rock formations shaping the coastline and inland areas. Reddit

Unlike some of the more accessible islands, Suðuroy requires a ferry journey, which adds to its secluded charm. This isolation means that popular spots like Hvannhagi can offer a more peaceful experience, especially outside of peak times. The flora and fauna are also characteristic of the Faroes, with abundant birdlife and hardy vegetation adapted to the maritime climate. Experiencing Suðuroy is about embracing the raw, untamed nature of the North Atlantic. Reddit
