What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Batilamu offers a challenging yet incredibly rewarding hike with stunning summit views. While the trail can be difficult to navigate and the FJD $25 fee is considered high by some, the experience of interacting with the friendly locals in Abaca Village and the breathtaking scenery make it a memorable one-time adventure for many.
"The walk was amazing ,we hiked up the mountain, took 4 hours. Super hard so bring lots of water :) As people mention, the gravel road it a bit bumpy ( we met horses and cows as well so that was a plus. We don't have 4WD but advice strongly against going the day after it has rained.
You do pay 25$ per person and parking is included however for how poor the route is compared to the sand dunes ( with entrance of 10$) I think it is over prices. Regardless, if you follow the route on All trails there is no issue. Wouldn't go back again but a fun one time experience.
What I do have to add, locals are amazing! We did have a man who tried to help us with parking ( which was kind when we got stuck) but then he wanted to take our keys and park it for a fee I assume. But there were no restaurants as some people mention on some reviews , at least when we went!"

"Hiked with my work mates at the end of COVID operations in late November 2021. I was personally surprised because I was not aware the team was going for the hike. It was a pleasant surprise and the therapy I did not know I needed. We paid the local fee to the Abaca villagers and then started the journey crossing a river and up the grass hill before entering into the forested mountains. It's best to go early in the morning maybe start the hike at 5 or 6am. It was my first ever time to hike so it took me around 4 hours. (I know, right?) The second hike took me 3hours and 30minutes. I know right! I did a second hike to this place in December 2023 and plan to do more. It was a few days after my first hike that I realized- it was love at first hike! Best to go before rainy seasons starts it Fiji or late November to early December is an okay time to go. It's not too wet or too dry during this time.

"A steep climb to the top, best done in the early morning as clouds can sit at the peak in the afternoon. You can order lunch ($15pp) to be served after the hike when you pay the admission fee. We met a woman in the Lautoka market who called one of the few taxi drivers who will go to the village. If you are in Lautoka on Friday or Saturday ask around the market for someone from the village. Otherwise, you need to prebook a driver or rental car. 2WD can go in the dry season. The start is confusing as you need to look for a trail at a sharp angle to your right as you walk down the hill from the park office. Once you cross the river you will see a rudimentary gate. Walk through and take a left. The trail becomes really obvious after 50 meters. After the big Mango tree, you will turn left in the grove of trees at the creek (don't follow the creek) and head along the rocks and grass towards the ridge. There is a split in the trail. Left goes to waterfall. Right goes to mountain. The waterfall is absolutely worth it and an additional 90 minutes RT. The trail is very difficult to follow unless you have experience navigating Backcountry trails. Download All trails ahead of time and search for the mountain name to get GPS guidance rather than waiting until you're lost as I did."

πΈ πΈ Photography
Early mornings offer the best light and clearer skies. Aim for sunrise or the hours just after to capture the landscape without harsh midday sun or afternoon clouds.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive views. A sturdy tripod can be useful for low-light conditions or capturing panoramas. Don't forget a protective case for your gear.
The summit offers the most iconic panoramic shots. However, various points along the trail provide beautiful glimpses of the surrounding rainforest and valleys.
Always ask for permission before taking photos of individuals, especially in the village. Most locals are friendly and happy to be photographed if asked politely.
The main challenges are the changing weather (clouds can roll in quickly), the strenuous hike which limits time for photography, and potentially difficult trail conditions.
