"September 2023. Great boat, great gear, great guys & amazing fishing.
This was our second charter with the team at Hidden Gem. We first chartered with them from Plantation Island in November last year for half a day where we caught Barracuda & GT. We got chatting to them and mentioned we were looking to get married in Fiji & would book them again for more fishing on our honeymoon. They suggested a beautiful resort in the Yasawas called Nanuya Island Resort.
This time we booked 2 full days fishing. The boys picked us up from the resort and the first day we headed to a reef for some top water action and the boys didn’t disappoint with a GT strike off the first cast. From there the action was endless with non stop fish coming over the rails from tuna, bluefin trevally, a bazillion big FAT red bass and some 16-18kg GT.
After 4hrs casting we needed a break so decided to troll and were kept just as busy with Spanish Mackerel coming over the rails one after the other.
While trolling, the skipper noticed some feeding Mantaray on the surface so we circled back to check them out which was super cool to see & watch them feed up close. They weren’t worried about us at all.
Day 2 we decided to change it up a bit and try some jigging. We got an esky full of red jobfish and a couple of bigger fish that busted us off. Still sore from the day before we opted for some more trolling and once again the mackerel were in abundance. While trolling we caught some skad mackerel so the guys from hidden gem recommended we try some deep water trolling using the down rigger. Almost immediately we had a hit and pulled up a huge mackerel.
Nice to finally get one on board as we dropped three big ones earlier in the day.
We baited up with the next skad ready to drop the down rigger and before the weight even hit the water a big mackerel hit it on the surface and took the tail off but unfortunately didn’t hook up.
There were so many fish we lost count.
We finished the day with a bit more topwater fishing casting stickbaits & poppers & managed to raise a couple of GT but unfortunately no hook ups.
The guys were so accommodating with what we wanted to do & try especially considering the weather wasn’t great on day 1, 25knot winds & still managed to put us on the fish.
Can not recommend these guys highly enough. They even turned up with a bottle of champagne to congratulate us on getting married.
Muscles were still recovering, days later!"
