Spent Midsummer’s Eve at Seurasaari, an island in Helsinki where an open-air museum is located. There are about 80 typical buildings from the end of 17th century to the 20th century transplanted and collected here from different provinces of Finland. (Oh, and I just learned that the beach here is one of the two nudist beaches in Finland!) It was a nice experience to witness how Finns in Helsinki...

Have you noticed the same? The island on the video is the museum island called Seurasaari. In my opinion, a must visit even if you’re only in Helsinki for a few days. Filled with historical wooden houses showing how the Finns used to live, and surrounded by nice cafes and wildlife. ☺️ #finland #suomi #livinginfinland #nordics #naturewalk #slowingdown #europeanlife

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Seurasaari Island for its unique blend of history and nature. The open-air museum is highlighted for its authentic buildings and passionate guides who bring Finnish heritage to life. The island's natural beauty and friendly wildlife offer a peaceful escape, making it a highly recommended experience for cultural immersion and relaxation.

"I visited this open-air museum in Helsinki on my own and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my trip!

Right in the first cottage I met an amazing guide who truly brought Finland’s past to life. He wasn’t just repeating textbook facts. He shared lesser-known stories with such passion that I could feel how much he enjoys digging into history. From why red houses became a symbol of Finland, to how whole wooden homes were once moved across the country, to the hidden meanings in words like väki. Every detail felt like a window into another world. He was also kind enough to take a photo with me which made the moment even more special.

What impressed me most was the way he connected everyday traditions, like the sauna, with deeper cultural layers. Learning that it was once considered a sacred space, where life both began and ended, made me see Finnish culture with fresh eyes.

All the staff were dressed in traditional costumes which created a wonderful atmosphere and many of them were very knowledgeable too, happy to share interesting stories and facts.

Even though I came alone, I never felt lonely. The stories and people made the place feel alive.

Highly recommend this museum if you want to go beyond the surface and experience the soul of Finland. ✨"

"Wonderful museum! Such an interesting buildings and details. All staff fluently speak English, and is willing to answer all the questions you might have about the history, peculiarities and the tiniest trifle you happen to spot during the tour. The museum closes at 5 pm, but it means only that the buildings are locked, the territory itself is opened 24/7 and is more like a public park."
