What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Turku City Theatre is praised for its talented personnel, innovative productions, and modern, well-equipped venue that meets European standards. Visitors appreciate the comfortable seating, excellent acoustics, and the enjoyable cafe with river views. However, some reviews strongly criticize the addition of an electronic screen on the facade, viewing it as detrimental to the historical cityscape and cultural integrity.
"A theatre that sets up an electronic screen amid such invaluable landscape is essentially not a cultural institution. In any landscape, a screen on a façade facing a public space, for that matter. Even to a private space, I must say.. it would've been insensitive, selfish and a backwards veneration of tech in detriment to the humane, spontaneous and picturesque appreciation of space. In such a special surroundings it shows a lack of development that is beyond what words can reach
It ruins the enjoyment of the riverbank walk and historical cityscape. It is utter underdevelopment and this type of things made me leave Turku, which otherwise is a special town. The town chose tech over humane, though. A brain drain would naturally follow
Not to mention people with sensory processing sensitivity, i.e. highly sensitive people who are impaired by this type of agression and are estimated to be 20% of the population. Precisely the type of individuals whose perception allows them to create unique and timeless works of art, and Nobel Prize winners. We are now killing them every day. But it is not just about individuals, it's a human aspect that is crushed. Which happens to be the aspect that ultimately makes us human.. sensitivity. A shame
In a country that calls itself humanly developed. Isn't it interesting.. how tricky things can be. How technology is nowadays imposed over people as in an Orwelian dystopia. And how the natural tameness of Finns is exploited. Then we talk about the levels of depression and suicide. How about talk about the real roots of psychological problems epidemic. To be treated like a robot and deprived of your very subconscious autonomy by the omnipresence of electronic ad screens, even at a theatre. That autonomy is all we have. This free appreciation of our surroundings, without active screens forcing whatever contents and agenda on our minds and we cannot turn them off. This is public space being chartered. We are not robots and our minds are not prey or a commodity to be chartered. This is our very existence. Imagine to be forcefully told by a government ad campaign that you are happy. And you can't reply. Ads are a one-way message. They physically reach our minds. We can't do anything. The police is there to protect the panel. I can't imagine anything more totalitarian. Nor did George Orwell himself
On the façade of a theatre. Even the modernist building itself is ruined. If one cannot notice that.. it's worrying
But the most worrying. The absolute lack of class, taste and education shown by the use of an electronic screen on a theatre façade. The absolute intellectual incompetence of it. The narrow mindedness of it. As if tech would ever replace subtlety"

"The renovated theatre seems to work well.
The service at the interval appeared to be fluent, and the house white wine was cool and of decent quality.
We saw a farce called The Play that went all wrong (My translation of the Finnish title) and we had quite a few good laughs."
