What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the museum for its intriguing focus on the Man in the Iron Mask legend and the historical significance of Fort Royal. The stunning island location and panoramic views are consistently highlighted as major draws, offering a beautiful natural setting alongside the historical exploration. Some find the museum a bit small, and the aquarium's limited hours can be a minor disappointment.
"Definitely worth the visit if you like history. The entrance only €6.50. You also will be able to take the best shots as it placed at the highest point on the island."
Alex Smirnov
"The cell with the Man in the Iron Mask was exciting and the cell with the story of the Hougenots/the Reformed was very interesting."
Laila Bonnevie
"Interesting museum about the real man in the iron mask and the prison he was kept in for part of his time in captivity. The museum also has an exhibit about Roman shipwrecks and some recovered artefacts. Upstairs there was an art installation made with recycled plastic waste.
It doesn't take too long to visit the entire museum, there is also a small aquarium included in the entry ticket but this is closed between 1300 and 1400 so I wasn't able to visit while I was there. However, the castle and the island of St. Marguerite is definitely worth a visit even just for a walk amongst the trees and around the lake on the western end of the island."
