What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Synagogue de Chambéry to be a pleasant, centrally located historical site, particularly appreciated as a refuge from weather or heat. While some consider it a 'mediocre cathedral' with a failed illusion attempt, others highlight its beautiful stained glass and unique trompe-l'oeil ceiling as must-sees. Its proximity to a lovely garden adds to its appeal as a peaceful interlude in Chambéry.
"If you are a devout Catholic, your reasons for visiting the cathedral have nothing to do with tourism, so this review is not for you.
For everyone else: it’s just a mediocre cathedral, with nothing particularly spectacular about it. If it were located in a city full of interesting attractions, I’d tell you to simply walk past it without paying much attention.
However, since it’s in Chambéry, a rather dull city, you might as well visit it to pass the time. As for me, I ended up there twice: once to escape the heat, and the second time because I got caught in the rain in the old town and all the terraces were full.
Bonus note: Trompe-l'œil is a painting technique that deceives the eye to create the illusion of three-dimensionality. In some cathedrals or chapels, the walls are painted so masterfully that they look as if they’re carved from stone (as in the case of the nearby Sainte-Chapelle du Château des Ducs de Savoie, located inside the ducal castle). Unfortunately, in this case, the attempt to create an optical illusion failed miserably."
