Reviews Summary
Visitors find Château de la Ferté-Saint-Aubin to be an interesting and authentic place, particularly enjoyable for families with its engaging games and historical exhibits like the toy museum and kitchen. However, some guests were disappointed by the condition of certain areas and the escape game's primary French language, finding the overall value for money questionable compared to other chateaux.
"We visited the castle on Sunday, late June and it was almost empty. Only few other tourists. We do not speak French and it was a little leaflet provided in English (and few other languages) that you scan via your phone. We went there because of the Escape Game they advertise on their website. There is no info anywhere that the game was only in French and we learned about it when we entered the castle. Even though, we tried to play using our mediocre knowledge of French and translator but escape room riddles were mostly destroyed, with missing elements that make the solving of the room impossible. Everyone walked in and out with no one from the castle to bring back the settings to the start level in the rooms. What sounded like a fun experience for a family turned out to be dusty, very worn out place, totally not worth the money. Visit for the chateau only doesn’t seem justified for this price. There are other, better preserved castles to visit in the area. We were very disappointed."

"Fantastic chateau day trip, visited with kids 3 & 6 years old - escape room & treasure trail in the castle was fab, kept them entertained the whole way round. Loved the toy museum & before / after photos of the renovation. Kitchen was fully set up with the historical equipment, several secret passages & hidden doors - we spent about 3 hours here - would 100% reccomend & vist again! Staff also speak excellent english"

"We stayed at the two gites (Garenne and Ermitage) for two nights for a wedding. Garenne has a narrow spiral staircase which is challenging to navigate with luggage. The rooms are simple - there wasn't a dresser for our clothing. The family and kitchen space is large. There are ample showers but only two toilets per floor which can be challenging when all rooms are full. Ermitage had a smell of wood smoke. There was no way to lock up individual rooms yet chateau visitors would be wandering around the grounds so we locked our valuables in the car. There was no wifi in either gite or the Orangerie. There are no screens on the windows so if you leave a light on, the room will fill with bugs at night. There is a good bakery across the street. The town is a short walk away. Overall, a very simple experience."

The Château's Unique Appeal: Renovation and Games
Adding to its unique charm are the various games and activities designed to immerse visitors, particularly families. The escape room and treasure trail are popular, turning a historical visit into an adventure. While the escape game is primarily in French and has received mixed reviews regarding its condition, the intention is to make the chateau experience dynamic and fun for all ages.
Visitors can also explore a fascinating toy museum and a historically equipped kitchen, offering diverse points of interest beyond the typical castle architecture. This blend of historical authenticity, ongoing restoration, and playful engagement makes Château de la Ferté-Saint-Aubin a distinctive destination for those seeking more than just a static historical tour.
Accommodation and Amenities
For instance, the Garenne gite features a narrow spiral staircase, which can be difficult with luggage. While there are ample showers, the number of toilets per floor can be limited when all rooms are occupied. Some rooms may lack dressers for clothing, and there's no Wi-Fi in the gites or the Orangerie, which might be a drawback for some travelers.
Additionally, the lack of screens on windows means rooms can attract insects at night if lights are on. Security for personal belongings might also be a concern, as individual rooms cannot be locked, and visitors wander the grounds. Despite these points, the proximity to a good bakery and the town center are noted conveniences.
