What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Plage de l'Espiguette for its immense size, cleanliness, and beautiful, wild dune landscape. Many enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, especially in the evenings, and the opportunities for water sports. However, the lack of natural shade and the need to bring all provisions are common points of consideration.
"Very nice, big and clean beach. You can access the beach from the campsites or you drive to the end of the road to the parking lot. And then less than 10 min walk to the beach. Parking is free after 18:45. Sea was really fresh since it was raining the day before. If you prefer to be in the shadow, you have to bring yourself under umbrella since there is no natural shadow. We spent our time there in the late afternoon/evening and it was really quiet and empty. The sea is also really clean and beautiful!"

"This is a great beach. It's wide open and even when it's busy there's plenty of space. A few things to keep in mind. There are no places to buy food or drinks out here, So be prepared and bring your food and water. I highly recommend your own umbrella for shade in the summer. Also a small cart to bring stuff could be useful. It's a good 10 minute walk from the parking lot. If you are staying in the area and have bikes there is a bike path out to the beach. It's beautiful out here with no development nearby."

"A bit of a long walk across salt flats to the sea from the car park but worth it. The beach has life guards and people who walk along selling food and drink from trollies. Worth a look."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Unique Dune Landscape
Visitors often describe the walk from the parking lot as a journey across 'salt flats' to reach the sea, emphasizing the natural and undeveloped character of the area. It's important to respect the fragile dune ecosystem by staying on designated paths where available and avoiding disturbing the vegetation. The visual impact of these dunes, especially during sunrise or sunset, is truly spectacular.
While the dunes offer a unique backdrop, they also mean there's no natural shade on the beach itself. This is a crucial point for planning your visit, as bringing your own umbrella is almost a necessity for comfort during sunny days.
Water Activities and Wildlife
Beyond the typical beach activities, there's a surprising natural wonder to be found: dolphins. In recent years, sightings of dolphins in the waters near Le Grau-du-Roi have become more frequent, offering a magical experience for nature lovers. These sightings are often facilitated by partnerships with experts who ensure respectful and ethical wildlife observation.
For those looking to explore the coastline from the water, renting a boat is an option, even without a license. This allows for unique perspectives, such as enjoying an aperitif while watching the sunset over the Mediterranean.
Practicalities for a Perfect Day
Getting to the beach involves a walk from the parking lot, so consider bringing a small cart to help transport your gear, especially if you have a lot of items. While the beach is beautiful, visitors have reported instances of car break-ins, so it's vital to be vigilant and never leave valuables visible in your car.
For a more relaxed experience, consider visiting in the late afternoon or evening. The beach becomes much quieter, and parking is free after 6:45 PM, making it an ideal time for a peaceful stroll or to enjoy the sunset.
