Freedom of enjoying nature, and especially mountains, has always been a fundamental right in France. The owner has been fighting this right for years and has unfortunately won and managed to get a big part of the Chartreuse Park closed to the public.
Please don't give your money to this person, there are plenty of castle and monuments in the region deserving your business and support."

The inside is guided tour only (which is not to our taste) so we opted to view the gardens only. There is an orchard above the formal gardens and toilets.
