Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Château de Montreuil-Bellay for its rich history, stunning views from the ramparts, and well-preserved interiors, including a medieval kitchen and Renaissance frescos. The château's own wine is also a highlight. Some find the artwork overwhelming and the English guide notes difficult to follow, and advise planning around the lunch closure.

"À château that celebrated 1000 (really!) years of existence in 2025. Stunning views from the ramparts over the town and countryside and river. Drawbridge, moat, internal gardens, medieval kitchen and cellars and the « new chateau » or chateauneuf with rooms with contents only a few centuries old (tapestry, chapel, dining tables and other furniture perfectly presented). Beautiful, peaceful terrace in the courtyard. They also have their own vineyards and their wine (we tasted and bought) is very good."

Ian Jones

"Beautiful town with a stunning castle, produce their own wine.. we walked all of the way round, which was superb, although castle was shutting so we did t go inside.."

Paul McDonnell

"One of the smaller chateaus but still enjoyable to look round and great views of the surrounding areas. We were thoughtfully given guide notes in English but they were sometimes difficult to follow. There is unusual and disturbing artwork on display, perhaps not needed in such high volumes as it becomes repetitive and meaningless. Very helpful in the small gift shop. The chateau does close over lunch so take this into account when you're planning your trip."
