What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Chartreuse de Neuville for its historical significance and beautiful gardens, with many recommending the guided tour for deeper insights. However, some find the tours excessively long, while others highlight the exceptional quality of specific guides. The staff are consistently noted as friendly and helpful.
"A must-see if you are in the region. I recommend the guided tour, as it will give you access to more rooms but you will also find out so much more about the history of the building. Our guide, Luc, was amazing! We loved every minute of the tour, thanks again!"

"I would put 5 stars for the buildings and especially the gardens, which are beautiful. Unfortunately, we chose the guided tour to have access to areas not accessible to the public on the self guided visit. Having been told that the tour would be an hour, it ended up being over 2h, so much so that we dropped the group to be able to visit the gardens... The guide was way too long, quite boring a lot of the time, and it was quite a let down. I keep reading reviews of people enjoying their visit with a female guide, and I envy them, because after 1h I just wanted to go. You cannot keep an audience captive with silly jokes and repeating details over and over again for effect. I enjoyed the history of the place, but a lot of details I felt would have been better unsaid and brought nothing to the visit. A real shame as I was really looking forward to visiting the Chartreuse. Thankfully the beautiful gardens and the amazing exteriors made up for what I consider a waste of my time. My advice: don't book a guided tour, or make sure you have a female guide."

"When staying in Montreuil or Le Touquet make sure to visit this monastery. Very interesting building and history, spanning centuries. The building and gardens are beautiful, but knowing the story behind it makes it so much more interesting. Very friendly and helpful staff as well."

The Carthusian Way of Life
Visitors often remark on the peaceful atmosphere that still pervades the site, even without the monks. The history of the order, its rules, and its eventual departure from Neuville are key elements that guides often highlight. Learning about their daily routines, their vows of silence, and their spiritual practices can make the stones of the monastery speak volumes about its past inhabitants.
The Carthusian order still exists today in other locations, but the Neuville site offers a tangible glimpse into their historical presence. The blend of architectural preservation and historical narrative makes it a compelling destination for those interested in religious history and monastic life.
Navigating the Guided Tour Experience
Conversely, other visitors have had overwhelmingly positive experiences, praising their guides for their passion, depth of knowledge, and ability to bring the history to life. These positive reviews often mention specific guides who made the tour 'unforgettable' and 'moving.' There's a recurring sentiment that the quality of the guide can significantly impact the overall enjoyment of the tour.
If you opt for a guided tour, it's advisable to inquire about the expected duration beforehand. Consider your personal preference for historical detail and pacing. For those who prefer a more flexible exploration, the self-guided option allows ample time to appreciate the beautiful gardens and exteriors at your leisure.
The Allure of the Gardens
Whether you're visiting in spring when flowers are in bloom or another season, the gardens provide a picturesque backdrop. They are an ideal spot for photography, offering lovely compositions with the monastery in the background. The peaceful ambiance of the gardens allows visitors to relax and soak in the surroundings.
