Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Grotte de Rouffignac as an incredible and moving experience, highlighting the stunning prehistoric art and the unique electric train journey. The knowledgeable guides and the cool cave environment are also frequently mentioned positives. Some note the strict no-photography rule and the need to book English tours in advance.

"This is the most interesting tourist attraction in middle France.

In this cave, you will ride on an old little train that brings you inside the deep end of the cave witnessing some ancient paintings thousands years ago. There are mammoth 🦣, horses and human. At the same time, you could check many bear 🐻 holes inside there.

You can get off the train at the end and follow the tour to a "painting hall" with many paintings on top. It was the most important part of the tour.

Although the tour is conducted in French, you can rent a device with your language so that it could self explain what happened on the wall painting.

Btw, taking photos and video is forbidden in the tour. That is why the tour is so mysterious and interesting.

Also, remember to buy a stone souvenir after completion of the 1 hour tour. Get a mammoth stone for memory is so interesting.

Oh yes, the cave is a bit cold. You shall wear a jacket inside in order not to get cold.

It's a highly recommendation tourist location. Thx!"

"What an incredible experience to witness these ancient works of art in person with a very knowledgable and passionate guide. The train ride through the caves adds to the experience as it takes you quite deep within the system of natural tunnels. Definitely bring a sweater or long-sleeves as not only is it chilly but the train movement adds to that. I forgot, so it wasn't the end of the world, but I would have been more comfortable otherwise. Also, please don't bring children under the age of 5 or 6. They won't be interested, it's quite a long journey, and their crying kills the mysterious mood with no way to take them out."

Geoffrey Orens

"Absolutely loved visiting this cave, particularly in the very hot weather. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and interesting to listen to (I highly recommend booking a tour in English unless your French is very good). The cave paintings far exceeded my expectations and I found it surprisingly moving to see them. The train was great fun. Really worth the trip."

The Art of Rouffignac: A Prehistoric Gallery

Grotte de Rouffignac is renowned for its exceptional collection of prehistoric art, primarily engravings and paintings dating back approximately 17,000 years. The cave features over 250 representations, with a striking emphasis on animals. The most iconic figures are the mammoths, which are depicted in large numbers and various sizes, showcasing the artistic skill of Paleolithic humans. Other animals frequently represented include horses, bison, and ibex, offering a glimpse into the fauna of the era. InstagramReddit+1

The art is found deep within the cave system, accessible via an electric train. Visitors disembark to walk through specific chambers where the most significant artworks are displayed. The sheer quantity and preservation of these ancient drawings make Rouffignac a crucial site for understanding early human creativity and their relationship with the natural world. The cave's director has even commissioned replicas for inaccessible areas, highlighting the importance of this artistic heritage. InstagramReddit

It's important to remember that this art is incredibly fragile. Strict rules, including the prohibition of photography, are in place to ensure its preservation for future generations. The experience of seeing these ancient masterpieces in situ, illuminated by careful lighting, is profoundly moving and offers a unique connection to our distant ancestors. Reddit

Navigating the Cave: The Electric Train Experience

A unique aspect of visiting Grotte de Rouffignac is the journey into its depths via an electric train. This method of transport is not just for convenience; it allows visitors to traverse the extensive cave system without disturbing the delicate environment. The train glides through natural tunnels, providing access to areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Reddit+1

As the train moves slowly, guides point out significant features, including the prehistoric art and the distinct bear holes – circular depressions in the rock left by cave bears that used the cave as a den. The train stops at key points, allowing visitors to disembark and get a closer look at the most impressive engravings and paintings, particularly in the 'painting hall'. This combination of guided tour and train travel creates a captivating and informative experience. Reddit

The train ride itself adds to the mysterious ambiance of the cave. The cool, still air and the dim lighting enhance the feeling of stepping back in time. It's a comfortable way to explore the vastness of the cave, making it accessible for many visitors, though it's worth noting that some walking is still involved when disembarking. Reddit+1
