What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the awe-inspiring architecture and breathtaking views from cathedral towers. The intricate details, historical significance, and the sheer grandeur of these structures leave a lasting impression. Some reviews note that multilingual information or audio guides would enhance the experience for international visitors, and clearer ticketing information for upper levels would be beneficial.
"We came for the Luminous exhibition in the evening. It was very beautiful, colorful and joyful with the show and the music in the background also was so beautiful.
If you come for the show better come at least 20 minutes early to pick up the good seat.
Totally recommend the show !"

"The Strasbourg Cathedral is without doubt one of the most magnificent landmarks in Europe. Its soaring Gothic spire—once the tallest in the world—dominates the skyline and serves as the true center point of Strasbourg, visible from almost anywhere in the city.
The intricate stone carvings, the famous astronomical clock, and the stunning stained-glass windows make it a masterpiece of art and architecture. The square around the cathedral is lively, with plenty of shopping points and eateries, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere before or after your visit.
What Could Be Improved
The plaques and descriptions inside could be made multilingual (especially English, German, Spanish, etc.), or supplemented with an audio guide for international visitors.
The ticketing information for climbing the upper floors could be displayed more clearly—we unfortunately missed the chance because it wasn’t obvious."

"Visiting the Strasbourg Cathedral was an unforgettable highlight of my trip. Awe-inspiring structure is one of the most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture in Europe I guess.
The level of craftsmanship in every inch of the cathedral is truly unbelievable. Each carving, statue, and relief on its seems to carry deep meaning and historical richness. It’s not just decorative—it tells stories. You can spend hours simply admiring the exterior, discovering new details every time you look up: scenes from the Bible, mythical creatures, saints, and symbolic motifs, all sculpted with stunning precision.
Stepping inside is just as moving. The vast interior, stained-glass windows is just amazing. You can differentiate based on the art the era it was completed in given it took 500 years on an average to complete it. One of the highlights is the astronomical clock.
If you’re anywhere near Alsace, this cathedral is absolutely worth a detour. Magnificent is the only word that even comes close."

The Thrill of the Climb: Tower Access
It's crucial to be prepared for the physical demands. Comfortable footwear is a must, and those with a fear of heights or claustrophobia should carefully consider if the climb is suitable. Some towers, like the CN Tower in Toronto, even offer extreme experiences like EdgeWalk for the truly adventurous. Always check the specific requirements and conditions for each cathedral's tower access, as some may have age or health restrictions.
Beyond the physical ascent, the historical significance of these towers is immense. Many were once the tallest structures in their respective regions, serving as navigational points and symbols of civic pride. The views from the top offer a unique perspective on urban planning and the evolution of cities over time, connecting you directly to centuries of history.
Architectural Grandeur: Inside and Out
Inside, the stained-glass windows are a particular highlight, bathing the nave in kaleidoscopic light. These windows, often dating back centuries, are not only beautiful but also served as a way to educate the illiterate populace about religious narratives. The astronomical clocks, found in cathedrals like Strasbourg and Milan, are complex mechanical marvels that showcase incredible craftsmanship and scientific understanding of their time.
When visiting, take your time to appreciate the sheer scale and detail. Look up at the vaulted ceilings, examine the intricate altars, and notice the subtle nuances in the artwork. Many cathedrals also house significant relics or tombs, adding layers of historical and spiritual depth to your exploration.
Beyond the Tower: Experiencing the Cathedral
Consider attending a service or a musical performance if your visit coincides. The acoustics in these grand spaces are often phenomenal, and experiencing the cathedral in use can be a deeply moving experience. Some cathedrals also host special exhibitions or light shows, like the Luminous exhibition mentioned in reviews, which can transform the space into a vibrant, artistic spectacle.
Don't overlook the surrounding cathedral square or plaza. These areas are often lively hubs with cafes, shops, and street performers, offering a chance to soak in the local atmosphere and reflect on your visit. It's a perfect spot to grab a coffee and admire the cathedral's facade from a different perspective.
