Reviews Summary

The National University Library (BNU) is a visually stunning historical building with significant architectural merit. Visitors appreciate the free entry to the building and the option for temporary access cards, though the book organization can be confusing and staff friendliness varies. Some visitors have reported feeling unwelcome due to interactions with security.

"Big and beautiful library wis interesting modern stairs inside."

Lorelin Luctael

"Was able to get a temporary card as a visitor for a month, allowing for facility and wifi use etc. Two of the ladies weren´t very friendly, at all, BUT the younger gentleman working there was SO. VERY. KIND. and patient, going out of his way to help me get set up and make sure I had everything I needed, especially after the bit rough start. It was so appreciated and really turned the entire experience around. He gets FIVE stars... the place gets 4 ;) I only wish they had a few more memoirs/biographies in English and that the books were a bit easier to find. I found the way they were mixed in together/sorted a wee bit confusing. But again, a great resource to be able to access even when a visitor. It was 12 euros for the month, with possibility for extension, which I found very fair. THANK YOU!"

No fee required to enter the building but you need access cards to enter the library. A foreigner can access to exposition area at €6 for a guided tour."

A Glimpse into History

The National University Library (BNU) in Strasbourg is not just a repository of books; it's a testament to resilience and cultural preservation. The current building, opened in 1895, stands on the site of its predecessor, which was tragically destroyed by Prussian forces in 1872. This destruction led to the irreparable loss of priceless manuscripts, including the renowned Hortus Deliciarum. The library was rebuilt as the regional library for Alsace-Lorraine, reflecting German traditions of regional cultural institutions. Reddit

The architectural design by August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann is a significant feature, incorporating ornate Greek statues and figures that lend the building a majestic presence. Its role evolved over time, and it now stands as the second-largest library in France. The collections have grown substantially, largely due to generous donations from across Europe and the United States, making it a vital center for research and learning. Reddit

Visitors can appreciate this rich history through the exhibition areas, which offer insights into the library's past and its importance. The building itself, with its historical significance and architectural beauty, is a destination worth exploring for anyone interested in the cultural heritage of Strasbourg. Reddit

Visitor Experience and Access

Accessing the BNU as a visitor involves understanding its entry policies. While the grand building is free to enter, using the library's resources requires an access card. For international visitors, a guided tour of the exhibition areas is available for €6, providing a structured way to engage with the library's offerings. Reddit

For those planning a longer stay or requiring more in-depth access, temporary visitor cards can be obtained for a monthly fee. These cards grant access to the library's facilities, including Wi-Fi, which can be invaluable for researchers or students. The cost is considered fair, with the possibility of extensions, making it a practical option for extended visits. Reddit

However, the visitor experience can be mixed. While some staff members are exceptionally kind and helpful, others may not be as friendly. Navigating the extensive book collection can also be a challenge, as the sorting system might seem confusing. Visitors are encouraged to be patient and seek assistance from the staff, particularly the younger, more accommodating members, to ensure a positive experience. Reddit
