Château de Villandry (vee-lahn-dree) is famous for its extensive gardens, considered to be the best in the Loire Valley and possibly all of France. Its château is mediocre by Loire Valley standards, but the grounds — arranged in elaborate geometric patterns and immaculately maintained — make it a sight well worth the visit.   Finished in 1536, Villandry was the last great Renaissance château built...

Reviews Summary

Visitors overwhelmingly praise the stunning and meticulously maintained gardens, calling them the absolute highlight of any visit. The château interior offers a valuable historical context and beautiful views, though it's considered secondary to the garden's splendor. The site is well-organized and offers affordable refreshments.

"If you come for nothing except the gardens, come. This was a stunning display of gardening for design and sustainability. Absolutely fabulous. Clearly the Château is old and requires constant upkeep. However, the art, furnishings, and gardens were just breathtaking. You can really see how people lived there. It was one of the best experiences I had touring the châteaux in France."

Erica L.

"Absolutely worth a visit, it's a short drive away from Chenonceau Castle. Unlike many other castles, it is still privately owned by the last family that took possession of the castle in the 20th century about who you can learn more during your visit. The rooms are nicely set, giving you a great glimpse of the life the castle ones boasted. The gardens are a sight in themselves but honestly you get the best view of them from the actual castle!!"

Elana Podvalniuk

"Lovely time at the castle and gardens. Could walk in the shade in the gardens ( very hot day) also art exhibition from an artist, loved it. Coffee and ice-cream at an affordable price at the front, also a restaurant but didn't go there. Space for the bikes at the front"

The ornamental gardens are a visual feast, featuring intricate geometric patterns, vibrant floral displays, and symbolic arrangements that change with the seasons. These gardens are designed to be admired from above, making the ascent to the château's medieval tower a must-do for any visitor. Reddit

Beyond the ornamental beauty, the kitchen garden offers a unique and practical perspective on historical agriculture. Here, rows of vegetables and herbs are arranged in decorative patterns, showcasing a sustainable approach to food production that was common in the 16th century. This section is not only educational but also visually striking. The water garden, with its serene ponds and elegant landscaping, provides a tranquil counterpoint to the more vibrant areas, offering a peaceful space for reflection. Reddit

Inside the Château: A Glimpse of History

While the gardens steal the show, the Château de Villandry itself offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Unlike many other Loire Valley châteaux that were grand royal residences, Villandry is a privately owned estate, still managed by the descendants of its 20th-century purchasers. This personal connection lends a unique atmosphere to the interior. Visitors can explore several rooms that have been furnished to reflect different periods of the château's history, providing insight into how its inhabitants lived. Reddit

A key recommendation for understanding the château's journey is to watch the introductory video available at the entrance. This short film details the château's construction, its periods of neglect, and the extensive restoration efforts undertaken to bring it back to its former glory. This context significantly enhances the appreciation of the rooms you visit, particularly the final room that recreates a 16th-century living space. Reddit

While only a portion of the château is open to the public, the accessible rooms are well-presented and offer a good sense of the estate's historical significance. The climb to the medieval tower is well worth the effort, not just for the historical perspective it offers on the château's architecture, but primarily for the unparalleled panoramic views it provides over the magnificent gardens below.
