What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking beauty of the crystal-clear, shallow waters and the unique experience of standing miles offshore. The opportunity to see sharks and rays up close is a major highlight, creating unforgettable memories. Some find the tours can be crowded during peak times.
"We visited Matira Beach in Bora Bora, which became both the starting and ending point of our trip. We enjoyed activities there, including scuba diving, and the setting was breathtaking—soft, bright sand and vibrant blue water that looked like the postcards, only even more beautiful in person.
Bora Bora forever in my heart."
Marta Stashevska
"Ok so you can totally and easily swim yourself out to the coral garden. This has an underwater heart and an "I love bora bora" caption spelled out underwater in some of the clearest water you will find in the world.
The swim is about 600 meters and although the current is basically a joke and VERY mild compared to anywhere real you want to be mindful and walk on the beach up current. This bathtub like beach is very cool."
Aaron Schick
"We went to Matira Beach to watch the sunset and take a walk along the shore. The soft, white sand and turquoise water create breathtaking views—it’s incredibly relaxing.
Getting there was easy; we took one of the many taxis from the port for $5 USD per person. Returning after sunset was just as simple. Just wait a few minutes in the parking area, and taxis will arrive to take you back to the port."

Understanding Sandbars and Marine Life
Many visitors are drawn to the opportunity to stand in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by crystal-clear, shallow water. This surreal experience is often enhanced by the presence of marine life swimming around your feet. TikTok and Instagram creators frequently showcase these moments, highlighting the magic of being so close to nature. However, it's important to heed advice from experienced guides and locals who emphasize respecting the animals' space and avoiding any actions that could disturb them.
When planning your visit, consider that sandbars can shift and change with tidal patterns and weather. Tours are the most reliable way to access these locations, as they are equipped to navigate safely and know the best times and spots to find marine life. Always follow the instructions of your boat captain and guides to ensure a safe and memorable experience.
Responsible Tourism at the Sandbar
Never feed the animals. While it might seem tempting to interact closely, feeding disrupts their natural foraging behaviors and can make them dependent on humans, which is detrimental to their survival. Similarly, avoid touching or chasing sharks and rays. Observe them from a respectful distance, allowing them to approach you if they choose. This approach ensures their safety and provides a more authentic wildlife viewing experience.
When choosing a tour operator, look for companies that emphasize eco-friendly practices and marine conservation. These operators often provide educational insights into the local environment and adhere to strict guidelines for wildlife interaction. By being a mindful and responsible tourist, you contribute to the preservation of these beautiful natural wonders for future generations.
