What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Coral Gardens is celebrated as a premier snorkeling destination, offering breathtaking underwater scenery and abundant marine life. Visitors rave about the vibrant corals and the thrill of drift snorkeling. However, some caution is advised due to strong currents and shallow reefs, making proper footwear and timing crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.
"Some of the best snorkeling I've done in the last 40 years! Ask an AI engine when high tide occurs and go near that time.
If you are staying at Le Taha'a resort, the towel guy can give you water shoes and show you where to cross the channel. (No fins and only reef-safe sunscreen!) I used diving booties and my feet were hurting for several minutes.
After crossing, follow the path until it becomes very rocky and you see small bushes start to close in. Enter the water on the last 10ft. wide sandy section.
You'll be in the main channel very quickly and the current can make it tricky to swim perpendicular to shore and into little "canyons" where there is no current. Wear a rash guard just in case. Sometimes, though, the current isn't all that strong and you can burn some calories swimming upstream.
There are many, many places to stand on sand between coral heads. If you are nervous about the current and drifting, just start near the buoys and work your way upstream. Lots to see in that area and you'll have a great time!"

"Beautiful snorkeling location. The best in the Society Islands. Stayed on La Perle across the lagoon and used their free kayaks to get across to the motu, about 20 minutes."

"Love drift snorkeling here! Have been here 3 times over the years for many days & never gets old. Favorite is when I find an octopus, which I found today, & followed for a long time. Saw one last year too. Best to go at high tide or can be more difficult to navigate seaweed & coral paths."
