"The Ikhalto Academy is currently a true construction site. The entire complex is undergoing extensive restoration, and the situation is quite dire for visitors: the interior is completely inaccessible, as a dense framework of metal scaffolding and wooden supports obscures the nave and the walls entirely. From the outside, you can see the old stone structure propped up by temporary beams, while inside, a massive metal skeleton dominates the space, making it impossible to appreciate any of the original architecture or decoration.
As a reminder, the Ikhalto Academy was originally established between the 11th and 13th centuries, though the first educational building on the site dates back to the 8th–9th centuries. It became one of the most important cultural and scholastic centres of medieval Georgia, founded by the theologian and philosopher Arsen Ikaltoeli.
Given the scale of the work and the current state of the site, it is clear that it will be quite some time before the renovations are completed and the academy can be visited in proper conditions again."
