What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Bayreuth Catacombs fascinating for their historical significance as brewing cellars and wartime shelters, appreciating the unique underground atmosphere and the included beer tasting. However, the tours are primarily in German, which can be a significant drawback for non-German speakers who feel they miss out on crucial historical details.
"Fascinating Underground, But Language Barrier Holds It Back
The Bayreuth Catacombs are definitely worth seeing — the underground passages have an interesting history and the atmosphere is unique. The booking process was very simple, and when I made an enquiry, the response was fast and helpful, which I really appreciated.
However, the entire tour was only in German, which made it quite difficult to follow for non-German speakers. Some parts were still enjoyable to look at, but I feel like I missed out on a lot of the fascinating stories behind the place.
It would be much more inclusive if they could also offer tours in English (or at least provide an audio guide or handout in English). That way, international visitors could fully appreciate the history and details too."

"Very interesting underground voyage through history of beer and of the city. The katakomben are an extensive maze which served as warehouse, brewing location and even shelter during the war."

"We had a cold and damp but also very interesting visit to the Bayreuther Katakomben about 3 stories below ground. Our young tour guide was very pleasent andre accommadating. As we arrived at the location ahead of time and she kindly offered us copies of the guide-manus in English to read though, as the tour was in German only. It gave us a great chance to get familiar with history and help understand all that was being described during the 1-hour tour. Returning to ground level we were offered a free taste of the local brew (also non-alc. beverages were available) we had prebooked and paid for the tour and it is absolutely worth a visit."

A Journey Through Bayreuth's Underground History
Beyond their role in the beer industry, the catacombs also played a critical part in the city's survival during wartime. They provided essential shelter for residents, offering protection from aerial bombardments and other dangers. Learning about these periods adds a layer of solemnity and historical depth to the visit. The guides often share stories that bring these historical events to life, making the experience both educational and emotionally resonant.
While the historical context is fascinating, it's important to note the practical aspects of the visit. The underground environment is consistently cold and damp, regardless of the season. Visitors are strongly advised to wear warm clothing and comfortable, sturdy footwear, as the tours involve walking through extensive, sometimes uneven, tunnels. This preparation ensures a more enjoyable and comfortable exploration of this remarkable subterranean world.
Navigating the Language Barrier
To make the most of your visit, it's recommended to proactively inquire about English resources when booking or upon arrival. If an English guide or comprehensive handout isn't available, consider doing some pre-trip research on the history of Bayreuth's breweries and the catacombs. This background knowledge can help you better appreciate the context of what you are seeing, even if you miss some of the spoken commentary.
Despite the language challenge, many visitors still find the experience worthwhile due to the unique atmosphere and historical significance of the site. The visual aspect of the extensive tunnels and the included beer tasting can still provide a memorable experience. However, for a fully immersive understanding, being prepared for the language aspect is key.
