The stunning vineyard views and the thrill of the climbing sections are consistently praised, though some note the exposed nature of parts of the trail requires caution. It's a highly recommended experience for those seeking both scenery and a bit of an adrenaline rush.

"Enjoy the scenery by some activity in this pictoresque place. Take your time to unwind."

ABRAHAM BECKERS

"This via ferrata has a website, where you can also find a map in PDF format.

The climbing route starts at the small but adequate parking lot at the Roman wine press, about one kilometer east of the town limits of Ürzig (Caution! Despite its name, the climbing route is not on the Erdener side!).

Two ancient wine presses were discovered here, one of which is the oldest Roman wine press house in Germany. A smoke chamber, known as a fumarium, was added to this in the 4th century AD, where smoke was used to accelerate the aging of the wine.

On the west side of the site, the trail climbs into the vineyard. The well-marked climbing route leads up the rocky, steep slope via switchbacks and ladders to the first road. Follow this briefly to the left, then leave it steeply uphill. The convoluted route now leads up further ladders, brackets, and along exposed rock faces to a second road. Both could serve as exits (to the right) for overtaxed hikers.

Incidentally, the vineyard has monorails, which are cog railway lines used to transport the grapes down.

Shortly before reaching a third road, the climbing trail then turns decisively west, towards Ürzig. It continues in the familiar manner until the climbing trail climbs steeply at its westernmost end in switchbacks. The scrambling sections end here.

The switchbacks lead up to the castle hill. Halfway there, you could turn right, which would take you to the third road mentioned above. We tried it: The path is beautiful, but there are no more climbing sections here.

If you continue following the switchbacks uphill, the loop turns right at a viewpoint further up. The hike continues uphill a bit further, and only high up in the forest can you turn left to the Burgberghütte. We, however, followed the signs east.

You soon reach a stream flowing down a steep ravine. Here you emerge from the forest. The trail then continues, once again heading far east, through the vineyards back to the starting point.
