Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the DomRömer Quarter for its beautiful reconstruction, capturing the essence of a medieval old town. It's highlighted as a must-visit for its picturesque architecture, vibrant atmosphere, especially during Christmas markets, and its central location for exploring Frankfurt. Some note that while rebuilt, it offers a charming historical experience.

"It is one of the nicest places to visit during the Christmas season. The location is full of tents and vendors with multiple stands offering a variety of cute goods, Christmas decorations, and food."

Ricardo Moreno

"I always love to see the beautiful cathedral in Frankfurt, offering amazing views from both outside and inside."

David Drabek

"If you’re in Frankfurt, I recommend that you come here for a short visit. You can take the U Bahn to get there and get off at Dom/Römer. Usually the tower is open but they are currently renovating it. If you are actually able to go up to the tower do it! Unfortunately it’s closed until 2022. It costs a couple of euros but you simply go to the top and have the most breathtaking view of Frankfurt. You have to go up a ton of stairs and if you are uncomfortable with small spaces then I don’t recommend it. The inside of the cathedral is nice too but since the tower is closed I only give it 4 stars."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Reconstruction of the DomRömer Quarter

The DomRömer Quarter, once a vibrant medieval heart of Frankfurt, was largely destroyed during World War II. The area remained a mix of modern buildings and ruins for decades. In a remarkable undertaking, Frankfurt decided to reconstruct a significant portion of the old town, meticulously rebuilding 15 historic houses and constructing 20 new ones in a historically inspired style. This ambitious project, completed in 2018, aimed to restore the city's historic skyline and provide a tangible connection to its past. Reddit

The reconstruction involved extensive research, using historical documents, photographs, and even archaeological findings to recreate the original facades and layouts as accurately as possible. The result is a charming and authentic-feeling 'New Old Town' that seamlessly blends the old with the new. Visitors can now wander through narrow alleys, admire the intricate half-timbered architecture, and imagine life in medieval Frankfurt. Reddit

This project has been a significant success, revitalizing the city center and becoming a major tourist attraction. It offers a unique perspective on urban planning and historical preservation, demonstrating how a city can honor its heritage while embracing modernity. The DomRömer Quarter is not just a collection of buildings; it's a testament to Frankfurt's resilience and its commitment to its identity. TikTok

Exploring Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus)

The Frankfurt Cathedral, officially known as the Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, holds immense historical significance. It served as the site for the election and coronation of Holy Roman Emperors for centuries, earning it the nickname 'Kaiserdom' (Imperial Cathedral). Although it has been rebuilt multiple times due to fires and damage, its imposing Gothic architecture remains a striking landmark. Reddit

Visitors can explore the cathedral's interior, marveling at its vaulted ceilings, stained-glass windows, and the Imperial Hall, which houses replicas of the imperial regalia. A highlight for many is the opportunity to climb the cathedral's tower. This ascent, involving numerous stairs, rewards climbers with spectacular panoramic views of Frankfurt's skyline, including the modern skyscrapers and the Main River. Reddit

It's important to note that the tower has undergone renovations, so checking its accessibility before your visit is advisable. Reddit Even without the tower climb, the cathedral's historical ambiance and architectural beauty make it a worthwhile visit, offering a glimpse into Frankfurt's imperial past. TikTok

Experiencing the 'Neue Altstadt' Atmosphere

The 'Neue Altstadt' (New Old Town) surrounding Römerberg square is designed to evoke the charm of medieval Frankfurt. As you stroll through its narrow, winding streets, you'll encounter a delightful array of half-timbered houses, each with its unique character and historical inspiration. This area is more than just a picturesque backdrop; it's a living part of the city, filled with independent boutiques, artisan shops, and inviting cafes. Reddit

Many visitors find the 'Neue Altstadt' to be an ideal starting point for their Frankfurt exploration. It's a place where you can easily spend an hour or two simply wandering, taking in the sights, and perhaps stopping for a coffee or a traditional Apfelwein (apple wine) at one of the local establishments. The atmosphere is generally relaxed, especially during weekdays, allowing for a more intimate experience. Reddit

During festive periods, like the Christmas season, the 'Neue Altstadt' truly comes alive. The squares and alleys are adorned with festive decorations, and the area becomes a hub for the renowned Frankfurt Christmas Market, offering a magical experience with numerous stalls selling crafts, gifts, and seasonal delicacies.
