What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise Bergzoo Halle for its beautiful city views, friendly staff, and well-designed play areas for children. The zoo's unique hillside location adds to its charm, though it can be challenging for those with walking difficulties. Some reviewers noted a limited number of animals or empty enclosures, and occasional issues with ticket counter staff rudeness, but overall, it's considered a worthwhile visit, especially for families.
"What a lovely zoo, well worth a visit if you are in Halle. Easy to find, reasonably priced, great location, and what a magnificent view of the city from the top of the zoo.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced snacks and drinks.
Well designed play area for the children, as well as a cute petting zoo with the most adorable little goats. On this occasion, I didn't make any comment about garlic and rosemary!
Be aware it is on a hill and might not be suitable for someone with walking difficulties. But there are plenty of areas to sit."

"I’m gonna start with the positives.
Buying the tickets in advance (online) is cheaper compared to buying the tickets in the zoo itself. However you can’t just scan the tickets on a machine and go in but you need to go to a counter. I bought the cheaper tickets since I’m a student and the lady only said “Ermäßigung” (card that students get in Germany), I absolutely understand that she needs to check it since it was cheaper but she was quite rude. Also the price just doesn’t justify the experience there.
There is a very good panorama of the city.
You can borrow a small “vehicle” for the kids since they are gonna be tired since it is pretty steep at some places.
The zoo itself is very pretty and it has a lot of animals you can look at. You can read about the animals being held captive there. Also you can look at the animals as they’re being fed, which is as I can imagine a good entertainment for the kids.
However sometimes the animals aren’t to be seen numerous times throughout the day."

"The zoo does not impress, Animals very few ( maybe it is better ), a lot of empty enclosures. More walking on the roads than watching. Signage chaotic. Such a place to go once on a boring weekend. The view from the lighthouse at the top improves the overall rating, but is that what a zoo is all about ?...."

The Unique Terrain of Bergzoo Halle
The hillside setting also contributes to the zoo's charm, creating distinct zones and viewpoints. Animals are housed in enclosures that often take advantage of the natural landscape. This means that some enclosures might appear more spread out or integrated into the hillside. While this can make spotting certain animals a bit more of a treasure hunt, it also provides a more naturalistic habitat for the animals. The zoo's design encourages exploration and discovery, making a visit feel like an adventure rather than a simple stroll.
When planning your visit, consider the weather and your own physical capabilities. A visit during the cooler parts of the day or on a less crowded weekday can enhance the experience. The effort required to explore the zoo is often rewarded with stunning views and a sense of accomplishment, making Bergzoo Halle a memorable destination for those prepared for its unique landscape.
Special Events and Seasonal Magic
Beyond the winter lights, the zoo also embraces the spooky spirit of Halloween with 'Gruseltage' (Scare Days) or 'Freakshow' events. These occasions transform the zoo into a haunted landscape with ghoulish decorations, costumed performers, and thrilling entertainment, offering a unique and exciting experience for those who enjoy a good scare.
Furthermore, Bergzoo Halle occasionally hosts beneficial events, such as the 'Hallesche BenefizTANZnacht,' where various activities contribute to supporting the zoo and its animals. These events not only provide entertainment but also highlight the community's commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
Attending these special events can offer a completely different perspective on Bergzoo Halle. The zoo's natural beauty is enhanced by creative lighting, thematic decorations, and engaging performances, making it a destination that offers something new and exciting throughout the year. It's always advisable to check the zoo's official website or social media for the latest information on upcoming events and ticket availability.
Community Support and Animal Welfare
These sponsorships are vital for providing specialized food, enrichment activities, and necessary veterinary care for the animals. The 'Wunschbaum' (Wish Tree) initiative, where animal keepers share personal wishes for their charges, further illustrates the dedication of the zoo staff and the importance of community involvement in meeting the animals' needs. These wishes often focus on enrichment items, special diets, or toys that enhance the animals' quality of life.
Beyond sponsorships, the zoo also benefits from community events like the 'Hallesche BenefizTANZnacht,' which raises funds to support the zoo's operations and animal care. This collaborative spirit between the zoo and its supporters underscores a shared commitment to providing a safe, stimulating, and enriching environment for all the animals at Bergzoo Halle. Visitors can feel good knowing their entry fees and any additional support directly contribute to these important efforts.
