Reviews Summary

Egidienkirche St. Egidien is appreciated for its unique contrast between a classic Baroque facade and a surprisingly simple, modern interior. Visitors find it a quiet and pretty place for a brief, reflective stop, often enhanced by art exhibitions. While not a major landmark, its distinctiveness makes it a worthwhile detour.

"Very quiet church. The inside is white and pink and it's really pretty and there is also an exhibition inside"

Yi-Hsuan

"A beautiful church. It's a strong contrast between the modern looking interior and the old style facade."

Paul Ciprian

"St. Egidien is a Baroque church at Egidienplatz in Nuremburg. The church's history dates back to the early Middle Ages. However, the church you see today is a post WWII reconstruction of the early 18th-century building by Johann Trost and Gottlieb Trost.

Sadly, during the 20th-century reconstructions, it was cost prohibitive to revive the churches previous ornate Baroque interior. Instead it seems a more subtle and economically feasible rebuild took place, resulting a rather simple interior that you see today in the form of an oval shaped nave with an appealing bronze crucifix at the main altar. The exterior is attractive, featuring two towers with clock faces, topped with crosses. These make for nice photos when you step back on the square a bit.

Have a look-see of the church if you plan to pass through Egidienplatz during your visit to Nuremburg. It is worth 5-10 minutes of your time to see the inside."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Contrast: Baroque Meets Modern

Egidienkirche St. Egidien presents a fascinating architectural duality. Its exterior boasts a classic Baroque style, complete with twin bell towers that are visually appealing from Egidienplatz. This historical facade hints at a richly ornamented past. However, stepping inside reveals a significant departure from traditional Baroque interiors. The nave is a simple, oval shape, a design choice that was more economical and practical following its post-WWII reconstruction. This stark contrast between the ornate exterior and the minimalist interior is what makes St. Egidien so unique and often surprising to visitors. Reddit

This approach to reconstruction was a conscious decision to rebuild efficiently after wartime damage. While the original Baroque interior was elaborate, the post-war rebuild prioritized functionality and a more subdued aesthetic. The result is a space that feels both historic and contemporary, offering a different kind of spiritual or contemplative experience than one might expect from a church of its age and exterior style. The prominent bronze crucifix at the altar serves as a powerful, yet simple, focal point within this serene environment. Reddit

A Place for Reflection and Art

Beyond its architectural intrigue, Egidienkirche St. Egidien serves as a tranquil sanctuary in the heart of Nuremberg. Many visitors describe it as a 'very quiet church,' providing a welcome respite from the city's more crowded tourist spots. The white and pink interior, though simple, is noted as 'really pretty,' creating a calming ambiance for reflection. Reddit

Adding another layer to its appeal, the church often hosts exhibitions. This integration of art within a sacred space offers a unique cultural experience. Whether it's religious art or historical displays, these exhibitions contribute to the church's dynamic role in the community, making it more than just a historical monument but also a living venue for artistic expression.
