What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kärlingerhaus offers a truly rustic alpine experience with stunning mountain views and delicious food, highly praised by many for its authentic charm. However, some guests have been disappointed by the lack of amenities like heating and consistent electricity, as well as perceived high prices and occasional poor customer service.
"We had a great stay, were very helpful for the staff's recommendations regarding hikes up to nearby peaks, had really delicious food (the chef also gave us a delicious pumpkin soup on the house!) and an overall 10/10 visit. Vielen Dank!
PS. I don't understand some of the reviews here. It's a simple alpine hut in the middle of nowhere; why would you come here looking for electricity, and if you need it so bad, why won't you carry a portable charger? Chill out and be grateful to have access to wonderful getaways like this one, geez."

"No heating in the rooms. Ice cold rooms for 40+EUR/night??
Not ONE plug in the whole building to charge a phone.
Understaffed. Breakfast is a joke.
At evening, they tried to overcharge us by 50 EUR because of the chaos (see understaffed part).
Extremely expensive. Food is expensive, small portions, and not good.
At a beautiful place, but a completely horrendous stay."

"I have never experienced worse customer service than I did at Kärlingerhaus.
Having hiked (as novices) from Salet to Kärlingerhaus via the Röthsteig and Wasseralm in der Roth, we arrived at Kärlingerhaus much later than planned (20:15) - we were relieved to finally see the DAV hut after a tough day. We were greeted by a staff member named Marian (shoulder-length black hair, sleeve tattoo on left arm) who was extremely condescending and rude.
We had arrived after last-call for dinner (20:00), so we were understanding when she told us as much, but the manner in which she did so was extremely unprofessional - she rolled her eyes and complained to us how she had just packed everything up and would now have to sort something out just for us.
We (my girlfriend and I) had booked two spots in the mattress dorm, but we felt pressured by Marian to upgrade to the (more expensive) private room with a shared double bed. She also pressured us to pay for the hut's (extortionately expensive) breakfast package, but when I said we had brought our own breakfast, she simply laughed at me.
Checking-in (a question of her confirming our beds and me filling in my details) probably took around fifteen minutes in total, and we felt like our time was purposely being wasted.
Fortunately, the kitchen staff managed to give us a massive portion (a whole oven dish) of letover pasta for dinner - whether all portions are so large or it was because we were given leftovers, we don't know. It is worth mentioning that every other staff member we encountered besides Marian was lovely.
We were very upset to find out that none of the showers in the hut were working (something to do with water supply, although there was still running water). This was frankly unhygienic considering we slept in an open dorm with 20+ people who were sweaty and smelly from hiking.
Overall, we were extremely disappointed with our stay at Kärlingerhaus, but not surprised given the bad reviews we had read beforehand."
