What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kourtaliotiko Gorge is lauded for its stunning natural beauty and the exhilarating experience of swimming in its icy waterfall pool. Visitors praise the dramatic scenery and the unique adventure it offers. However, some find the entrance fee steep for the perceived size of the waterfall, and the extremely cold water and challenging hike are noted as potential drawbacks.
"This is a beautiful hike south of Rethymno, Crete about 35 minutes driving. Parking is up the hill to the right as you go through the gorge. Parking is free, and you will walk along the busy road to the pay station to begin your hike. Our entrance was free because senior citizens have these nice benefits in Greece. They wouldn’t let us pay. There is a dirt path that’s rocky and easy to follow. The day we were there was incredibly windy, maybe 60mph winds. It made the hike more challenging. Wear some eye protection, sun protection and tie back your hair. It’s no fun eating your hair the whole way, haha. If you are doing the lower hike, bring or wear a bathing suit (there is NO changing room). Bring those river sandals because they are perfect! We had Teva sandals and the rocks didn’t bother us. The water feels icy cold, but it is so worth it to go in! The cave and waterfalls are amazing. Oh, bring your phone pouch as you have to swim a little. You might want a life jacket if you have small kids."

"This is a MUST SEE…This place is beautiful and can get here from port souda in 1hour 10 minutes. At the port there are rental cars near Virgin ship we paid 60 euros for a stick shift 4-5 seater the size of a mini cooper, with a large sunroof, easy to drive to with free parking. The hike was extreme.. bring hiking shoes. It’s 5€ entrance fee per person. We set aside 1 hour to do and take photos and the water is extremely freezing but worth it. It’s a joke at how freezing it was actually because I couldn’t believe I was doing it. I would NOT recommend children or elders. It’s is VERY difficult scaling the mountain in high winds and it felt like cat 4 hurricane winds, we both fell over and my man is 200lbs. Once down by the waterfall it’s not as windy but mild. It’s rocks so no where to put phone or valuables and you MUST SWIM to see the waterfall only about 15 feet but it is the most challenging 15 feet in freezing titanic type water. I got through it and was proud of myself and the payoff was worth it! Bring a towel and sunscreen and a waterproof phone pouch. Water shoes also"

"Amazing hike, highly recommend for the waterfall that you will find at the bottom. Beware, the water is cold! I am not one to enjoy particularly cold swims but if you muster up the courage - trust me, it is worth it. Loved it, would visit again."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfall Experience
Legend has it that five springs miraculously appeared when Saint Nicholas of Kourtaliotis touched the rock with his fingers, creating the waterfall. This adds a layer of mystique to the already breathtaking natural beauty. The gorge itself offers a dramatic landscape with towering cliffs and lush vegetation, making the hike a visually rewarding journey.
For those who prefer to admire from a distance, there are viewpoints accessible from higher up the gorge, offering panoramic vistas without the need to brave the frigid waters. However, the true magic of Kourtaliotiko Gorge is often found by immersing yourself in its cool embrace.
Navigating the Kourtaliotiko Gorge Hike
Visitors often start their descent from near the Church of Saint Nicholas. The path splits at one point: one route leads to an overlook for a view from above, while the other descends towards the river and the waterfall. The walk back up can be demanding, particularly in the heat of the day, so starting early or visiting later in the afternoon is advised to avoid the harshest conditions.
Remember to bring plenty of water, especially if hiking during warmer months. The natural beauty of the gorge, with its unique rock formations and the sound of flowing water, makes the effort well worthwhile.
