What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Amfissa Castle as an open museum showcasing over 2500 years of masonry evolution, from ancient Greek to Byzantine and Frankish periods. The spectacular views and peaceful, silent atmosphere are frequently highlighted as major draws, offering a serene escape. Some note that driving access can be challenging on narrower paths.
"An open museum, a site where the evolution of stone masonry through the ages is masterfully exhibited upon the different surviving sections of the walls.
More than 2500 years of history can be seen upon the walls of this site. Ancient Greek masonry of different types (polygonal, level-faced polygogonal, isodomic, pseudo-isodomic) can be seen even near full height in some sections.
Where these have collapsed either by the wear of time or by the forces of nature or by the aggression of attacking armies, they have been masterfully rebuilt mostly by byzantine and Frankish successors.
The name of the site (Amfissa) is dated even further back, as far as the Pelasgian Neolithic early Hellenic civilization, and most likely the site is built over and upon ruins dated during the late 3rd and early 2nd millennia BC. Remnants of this past are perhaps waiting to be found once the site is to be fully explored.
Spectacular views and easy access added, it is a must see."
