Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Roman Agora a worthwhile, though smaller, historical site, particularly appreciating the well-preserved Tower of the Winds. While some note it can be viewed from the outside, those who enter enjoy its unique architecture and historical context. It's often seen as a good complement to the larger Ancient Agora.

"If you’re looking for another thing to visit in Athens, this is the one! Amazing place with beautiful trees as well. The museum is included in the ticket price, there are clean bathrooms,… We paid 20 for an adult and this is definitely worth the price."

Hanne Veragten

"This spot is a neat archaeological find right in the middle of Athens. It’s super close to the Acropolis, so you can easily check it out. Even if you don’t have a ticket, you can see a lot of the Roman Agora from the nearby streets. Just a little note: there’s not a ton of shade, so don’t forget your water, sunscreen, and a hat! It tends to be way less busy than the Acropolis, which makes it a chill place to wander around the ruins. This site really shows how Athens evolved during Roman times. It’s a quieter place, but you still get a glimpse of the city’s rich history. The overall architecture is awesome, though most of the structures are gone, a few are still standing tall."

Bernie

"A worthwhile visit, especially as part of the multi-site pass, though definitely
Our shortest visit of the 7 sites. Only felt we needed about 30 minutes to see what was here. Even without a ticket, it’s easy to see from the outside, walking around the fences, as it’s so central in Athens. But the combo ticket it worth it to see the 7 included sites."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Tower of the Winds: An Ancient Marvel

The Tower of the Winds is arguably the most iconic structure within the Roman Agora. Built by Andronikos of Kyrrhos in the 1st century BC, it's an octagonal marble tower that served as a horologion (timepiece) and weather vane. Each of its eight sides is adorned with a relief depicting a wind deity, and it once housed a water clock and sundials. Its ingenious design made it a sophisticated scientific instrument for its time, showcasing the advanced understanding of astronomy and meteorology in the ancient world. Instagram

Visitors are often captivated by its unique architectural form and the detailed carvings of the winds. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity of Hellenistic and Roman engineering. The tower's preservation is remarkable, allowing us to appreciate its historical and scientific significance even today. TikTok

Navigating the Roman Agora vs. Ancient Agora

It's crucial to distinguish between the Roman Agora and the Ancient Agora of Athens, as they are separate sites with different historical periods and scales. The Ancient Agora, located west of the Acropolis, was the political, social, and commercial heart of classical Athens. It's a vast archaeological park featuring the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos. Reddit

The Roman Agora, on the other hand, was built later during the Roman period (19-11 BC) under the patronage of Julius Caesar and Augustus. It served as a marketplace and public space for the Roman community in Athens. While significant, it is considerably smaller than the Ancient Agora and its primary remaining structures include the Tower of the Winds and the monumental gateway. Reddit Travelers often recommend prioritizing the Ancient Agora due to its size and historical importance, but the Roman Agora offers a distinct perspective on the city's layered history. Reddit
