What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Antimachia Castle is praised for its impressive medieval fortifications and breathtaking panoramic views, offering a free and authentic historical experience. However, visitors note its largely ruined state and lack of maintenance, with no facilities available on-site. The unattended nature means visitors must be self-sufficient and aware of unofficial guides.
"The castle itself is impressive and the view is beautiful, definitely worth seeing. But the place is completely abandoned – no maintenance, no signs, and the toilets… honestly, they are disgusting. It looks like no one has cleaned them in years. It’s a shame such a historical site is left to rot like this. Bring water, toilet paper, and don’t expect any services. Sad to see such a great place in this condition."

"A huge castle with wonderful views. There are two chapels that are open within it. I have a historical interest, but there are no information boards inside the castle to give you that historical insight into why it was built, how it was used, who was there, etc."

"The great fortifications of Antimacheia were built by the Knights Hospitaler in the first half of the 14th century to provide security to the residents of the Central regions of the island of Kos.
People working the surrounding plains and plateaus could retreat within these walls in time whenever enemy ships were sighted.
The walls were seemingly massive enough not to require the support of towers. Though it is more possible that the towers were to be incorporated later, but this plan was never to be materialized. They did withstand the Turkish raid of 1457, when a handful of Knights and a couple of hundred locals managed to fend off a force that numbered more than 15000.
The site is easily accessible yet unattended, and its large size requires some time to walk along it. Better to have some supplies, at least water if visiting in the summer. Children should be attended to closely if venturing on the ramparts.
A little known gem that offers a spectacular experience to those with a soft spot for such monuments."
