What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Skotino Cave is praised for its impressive size, historical significance as a Minoan sanctuary, and its untouched, natural state offering free entry. Visitors appreciate the cool escape from the summer heat and the adventurous exploration opportunities. However, some note the challenging terrain in deeper sections and occasional litter at the entrance.
"You'll need transport to get there but it is well worth the visit. Not commercialised like Zeus Cave (free) and a lot easier to get to. There are however, step steps to the mouth of the cave and to get the bottom there's a combination of rough steps and rubble to climb over. You'll need good shoes - not flipflops! There is a viewing area at the mouth of the cave and part way down. Also there are a couple of churches to visit and these are also interesting."

"Gorgeous cave. Free entrance, not many people visit it. You can go down into the cave. Quite dangerous! You have to climb very steep and wet rocks. But if you are skilled enough, you can visit hidden chambers with ancient altars. If you get to the very bottom of the cave, you will find a place with complete silence and absolute darkness. Amazing!
Torch (it is better to have your hands free with a headlamp for climbing) and good shoes are essential!"

"We hired a quad and accidently found this cave, drove uphill to find the cave and a small church.
No touristst, no lights, no stairways, just peaceful nature."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider it a short adventure rather than a full-day excursion. The free entry makes it a budget-friendly option, and the sense of discovery can be thrilling for younger minds. For families looking for more structured kid-friendly attractions, places like Cretaquarium or Dinosauria Park might be more suitable, but Skotino offers a unique natural adventure if your children are up for it.
🚶♀️ Adventurous Explorers
The reward for your adventurous spirit is immense: discovering hidden chambers, ancient altars, and experiencing a profound sense of silence and darkness. Unlike crowded tourist caves, Skotino offers an untouched, raw natural environment that appeals to those seeking a more authentic connection with nature and history.

A Glimpse into History
Visitors can feel the weight of this history as they explore. The untouched nature of the cave, with no man-made structures like stairs or rails in its deeper sections, allows for an immersive experience. It's a place where stories and poetry are said to come pouring out, a testament to its powerful atmosphere. The cave's impressive size, being one of the largest in Crete at 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide, further enhances its historical and spiritual significance.
Navigating the Depths: Safety and Exploration
Light is another critical factor. While the entrance allows some natural light, the deeper you go, the more absolute the darkness becomes. Relying solely on your phone's flashlight is insufficient and can be dangerous. Many visitors recommend bringing a headlamp to keep your hands free for climbing and to provide a more reliable and powerful light source. This allows for a more thorough exploration of the hidden chambers and ancient altars that lie within the cave's core.
For those who are skilled and well-equipped, reaching the very bottom of the cave offers a unique reward: a place of complete silence and absolute darkness. This profound sensory experience, combined with the historical significance, makes Skotino Cave a truly memorable destination for the adventurous traveler.
